8 Crochet Face Mask Patterns

DIY face masks are in high demand. If you haven't been able to find masks to purchase and can't sew, then crochet may be of help to you during times of need.

We've compiled a few of our favorite masks to crochet for this collection of 8 Crochet Face Mask Patterns. Find a few pretty but utilitarian mask options or fashionable and stylish face masks that you'll enjoy putting on every time it's needed.

When it comes to making your own mask protection, fabric masks are preferred because they do not have holes. However, crochet masks, especially with a filter pocket or fabric layers are the next best thing. Plus, these masks can be reused when the weather gets chilly.

So, take a look at the collection of DIY masks below and choose which one works the best for your skill level (though nearly all of these are beginner-friendly). There's even a few for children specifically.

As a bonus to this list of crochet mouth masks, we're also sharing a few crochet ear savers. These fast little patterns help to keep the elastic from hurting the mask wearer's ears with prolonged wear.

Many crocheters are making masks and ear savers for charity or hospitals, along with their friends and family.

Editorial Notes: In settings where face masks are not available, healthcare professionals (HCP) might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered personal protective equipment (PPE), since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option.

Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

We are simply providing options for those looking but want to make it clear that this will not prevent you from spreading or contracting any viruses. It's up to you whether or not you want to wear a mask. We do suggest staying inside and away from others as much as possible during these troubling times. See right below for vital information from the CDC.

CDC Face Covering Information PDFs

The CDC has provided three free PDFs concerning face coverings. Between these three charts, learn about face coverings compared to other types of masks, when and how to wear coverings, the do's and don'ts, and how to interact with others during a pandemic.

DIY Face Mask

This DIY Face Mask pattern is designed to be worn over your traditional medical grade face mask. This fun crochet pattern will allow you to add a little bit of personalization to your otherwise boring face mask. You can use up your scraps making one or more of these crocheted masks, too!

Crochet a Face Mask

This crochet mask pattern comes with a free PDF to make creating this mask easier. It's perfect for beginners as all you need to know is single crochet and how to read a basic pattern. Again, you'll want to wear this DIY mask over a fabric or paper mask for better protection.

Easy Face Mask

Available in both adult and child sizes, we like this mask design because it reaches further than most across the face, minimalizing the gaps to the nose and mouth. Of course, since the yarn and crochet design will still allow gaps, it's recommended to supplement it with fabric or paper behind.

Crochet Face Mask With Filter Insert

This mask pattern includes adult and child sizes, is adjustable, and includes instructions for adding a filter insert. It uses a lightweight cotton yarn that makes it more comfortable in warmer weather. There's a video tutorial as well.

Adjustable Ties Crochet Face Mask

This crochet face mask is unique in that it ties at the back and can also can hang down when you need a break. It's good for anyone who doesn't like the sometimes painful elastic on the back wrapped around their ears or for someone with a hearing aid.

Simple Face Mask

With only one skein of most yarn types, you'll be able to crochet one adult and one child mask. This beginner-friendly pattern even includes instructions on adding a bendable wire on the mask to better fit the nose. Fabric lining instructions are also included.

From our friends at FaveCrafts! This full exclusive pattern includes a basic and easy-to-understand crocheted face mask pattern that may help slow the spread of COVID-19 to others. Again, it's recommended to layer with another mask or liner.

BONUS! Crochet Ear Savers

Ear savers are must-haves for healthcare workers who are wearing masks for long periods of time. Whether you're crocheting a mask or not, making these quick accessories is a helpful gift for anyone with a mask that includes elastic loops. Below, we're sharing three of our favorite styles of ear savers so you can choose which you want to make.
