This might sound strange, but I like to keep a selection of hostess gifts wrapped and ready in a little basket by my front door. Chalk it up to the days when my school aged kids would inevitably tell me at the last minute that they needed to bring something to donate or give to someone. I try for generic items, and this collection has a number of clever ideas. Ive already worked some up and will be making more in the future.
