Although this pattern is suitable for beginners- granny squares are great practice!- you will have to know enough to figure out how to lay out the squares to make an appropriate size. You can feel free to create your own pattern here. There's no right way or wrong way. This afghan is so darn cute!

This is a great pattern. It would have been even better if the details were provided for how the picture was created (how many squares to make and a layout diagram).
