How to Crochet Granny Squares

Learning how to crochet a granny square is quite simple and can open you up to a whole new world of crochet designs.

What is a granny square?
A granny square is a piece of square fabric that is worked in rounds from the center outward. Granny square patterns are usually worked up in bulk so you can piece them together for a larger project such as a blanket. Granny squares are often thought to be crochet building blocks since you can take individual granny squares and join them in different ways to make larger projects. 

Once you know how to make a granny square, the options are endless. You can work up a dishcloth, a hotpad, a blanket, a purse or just about any creation you can come up with by learning how to make granny square patterns.
