What is a granny square?
A granny square is a piece of square fabric that is worked in rounds from the center outward. Granny square patterns are usually worked up in bulk so you can piece them together for a larger project such as a blanket. Granny squares are often thought to be crochet building blocks since you can take individual granny squares and join them in different ways to make larger projects.

Once you know how to make a granny square, the options are endless. You can work up a dishcloth, a hotpad, a blanket, a purse or just about any creation you can come up with by learning how to make granny square patterns. We have some amazing video tutorials as well as designs that you'll go crazy over.

Learn How to Crochet a Granny Square

Before we launch into the crochet patterns, it's time to teach you the ins and outs of how to crochet a basic granny square with some fantastic video tutorials. Most crocheters that we've surveyed in the past are right handed; it's a very small portion who are actually left handed, but we have tutorials for both! Learn how to crochet a right-handed and left-handed granny square - the basic construction is the same, you want to crochet small squares, but your pattern will make a difference.

Once you've learned how to crochet a granny square, it's only appropriate to learn how to attach them. Attaching squares can be done many different ways depending on what look you're going for. You can join your squares as you go, as you start a new one, so you're constantly adding to your in-progress afghan. You can also sew everything together later once you've created all the pieces. Both methods work for situations, and we encourage you to try all the methods before deciding which you like best.
