Crochet Moss Stitch Tutorial

Updated June 19, 2018

Learn how to crochet the moss stitch in this step-by-step video from Heidi Gustad. The moss stitch is a super easy stitch to memorize, making it fast and easy to work as you're watching a movie or marathoning TV shows.

It's worked over an even number of chains, and the stitch is really just a single crochet-chain 1/sk 1 stitch-single crochet repeat across the row.

How to Crochet the Moss Stitch

  1. Chain an even number of chains, as many as you want or that your pattern calls for.

  2. Row 1: Sc into 4th chain from your hook, *ch 1, sk 1, sc into the next stitch; repeat across row.

  3. Row 2: Turn, ch 2. Sc into the next chain space (where we chained 1 in the previous row), ch 1, *sc in next chain space, ch 1; repeat across the row ending with a sc in the very last longer chain

  4. Row 3:  Ch 2, turn. *Sc in next chain sp, ch 1; repeat across the row, ending with a sc in turn chain from previous row

  5. Repeat row 3 until your work is the length you want.

I had never heard of a moss stitch. But after watching this video tutorial, I must say it's going to make a great pattern for the next purse I make. It's a nice solid pattern that I can line easily too. Thank you for teaching this old dog a new trick.
