If you're looking for a quick and easy Halloween costume this year, look no further than this crochet pattern. This year, dress your sweet little preemie in this delightful Pumpkin Crochet Preemie Hat. This easy pattern is worked in the round and provides two ways to crochet the vine decoration afterward. Featuring multiple sizes, this easy-to-make crochet hat will brighten up your Halloween. You can also skip the vines and work this in whatever color you choose for an easy anytime preemie crochet hat. 

Notes:
-Starting chain does NOT count as a stitch
-Each round is started in the same stitch as your starting chain
-The end of each round is joined by slip stitching in the first dc of the round, not the starting chain

Easy

Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Crochet Gauge15 stitches and 9 rows = 4” (10 cm) in dc

Materials List

  • Soft worsted weight yarn in Color A (Stem) and Color B (Pumpkin)
  • 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
  • yarn needle

Main Hat Pattern

  1. Size: 1 - 2 lbs (1 kg)
    Head Circumference = 9" - 10" (23-25 cm)
    Hat Circumference = 8.5" (21.5 cm)
    Height hat = 3.75" (9.5 cm)

    Start with a Magic Ring
    Round 1: With Color A - Ch 1, 11 dc in ring, join in first dc and fasten off (11)
    Round 2: With Color B - Ch 1, *dc in first stitch, FPdc around same stitch (increase made)* repeat around, join (22)
    Round 3: Ch 1, *dc in first stitch, dc in next stitch, FPdc around same stitch (increase made)* repeat around, join (33)
    Round 4 - 10: Ch 1, *dc in first 2 stitches, FPdc around post from previous round* repeat around, join (33)
    Round 11: Ch 1, sc around, join (33)
    Fasten off and continue with stem instructions below.

  2. Size: 2 - 3 lbs (1.4 kg)
    Head Circumference = 10" - 11.25" (25-28 cm) 
    Hat Circumference = 9.5" (24 cm)   
    Hat Height = 4" (10 cm)

    Start with a Magic Ring
    Round 1: With Color A - Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join in first dc and fasten off (12)
    Round 2: With Color B - Ch 1, *dc in first stitch, FPdc around same stitch (increase made)* repeat around, join (24)
    Round 3: Ch 1, *dc in first stitch, dc in next stitch, FPdc around same stitch (increase made)* repeat around, join (36)
    Round 4 - 11: Ch 1, *dc in first 2 stitches, FPdc around post from previous round* repeat around, join (36)
    Round 12: Ch 1, sc around, join (36)
    Fasten off and continue with stem instructions below.

  3. Size: 4 - 5 lbs (2.25 kg)
    Head Circumference = 11.5" - 12.5" (29-32 cm) 
    Hat Circumference = 11" (28 cm)  
    Hat Height = 4.25" (11.5 cm)

    Start with a Magic Ring
    Round 1: With Color A - Ch 1, 10 dc in ring, join in first dc and fasten off (10)
    Round 2: With Color B - Ch 1, *dc in first stitch, FPdc around same stitch (increase made)* repeat around, join (20)
    Round 3: Ch 1, *dc in first stitch, dc in next stitch, FPdc around same stitch (increase made)* repeat around, join (30)
    Round 4: Ch 1, *dc in first 2 stitches, dc in next stitch, FPdc around same stitch (increase made)* repeat around, join (40)
    Round 5 - 12: Ch 1, *dc in first 3 stitches, FPdc around post from previous round* repeat around, join (40)
    Round 13: Ch 1, sc around, join (40)
    Fasten off and continue with stem instructions below.

Stem

Round 1: Ch 2, make 5 sc in the 2nd chain from hook, do not join, continue working in a spiral (5)
Round 2 & 3: Sc around, do not join (5)
Round 4: Sc around, when you get back to the start, sl st in the next st, do not fasten off, continue with Vine #1 instructions.

Vine #1

Ch 13, make 2 sc in 2nd chain from hook, make 3 sc in each chain back to start, sl st in the next stitch on the bottom of the stem, continue with Vine #2 instructions.

Vine #2

Ch 9, make 2 sc in 2nd chain from hook, make 3 sc in each chain back to start, sl st in the next stitch on the bottom of the stem and fasten off. Use the yarn tail to sew the stem onto the hat. Weave in all ends.
