Crochet Earflap Hat
Special Instructions:
- Hat can be started with a Magic Ring or with the instructions given in Round 1.
- Starting chain does NOT count as a stitch unless otherwise directed.
- Each round is started in the same stitch as your starting chain unless otherwise directed.
- The end of each round is joined by slip stitching in the first stitch of the round, not the starting chain.
- To make the first Star Stitch of the round - Ch 2, draw up a loop in the second chain from the hook, draw up a loop in the Back Loop of the same stitch as your starting chain, draw up a loop in the Back Loop of each of the next two stitches (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1 to close the star (first Star Stitch made).
- To make the remaining star stitches of the round - Draw up a loop in the ch-1 space, draw up a loop in the same space that the previous star finished, draw up a loop in the Back Loop of each of the next two stitches (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1 to close the star.
- *IMPORTANT* - When you get to the end of the Round it will look like you are short one stitch, but this was done on purpose. If the last star was made the same way as the other stitches you would end up with an unsightly gap in the seam.
- So you will make the last loop of the final Star Stitch in the join space of the previous round. Slip stitch in the top of the first Star Stitch to join. The next Round of HDC will be worked in the Chain-1 spaces only and will complete the Star Stitch.

I love this pattern! I make animal/character hats and use this hat as the base. It's so beautiful. The pattern is easy to follow, and I appreciate all of the different sizes. Thank you for creating and sharing!

When I was stuck in bed for a month during my twin pregnancy, I spent part of that time making each of them a baby blanket. That was my first exposure to the Star Stitch and Ive loved it ever since. This project is nice because youre working the Star Stitch in the round. Ive already done a Copy and Paste of this entire pattern (all sizes included) for future reference. If youre not familiar with this versatile stitch, be sure to watch the embedded video.

With a pattern offered in every single size imaginable, we can now make an entire collection of matching hats for the whole family. Wouldn't this be great for a family photo?! The star stitch is explained in its entirety and using very simple verbage. I would love to use Loops and Threads Impeccable for these hats because they are anti-pill, come in tons of vibrant colors, and are wash/dry. Fun!

I really like this Star Stitch Earflap Hat pattern. I'm thankful that there are directions for all sizes that take out the guest work trying to figure it out myself. I can see my family members getting one for Christmas! Thank you so much for sharing this free easy hat pattern.

Why do so many tutorials no longer have pics? How do I know what it's supposed to look like?

This is the perfect everyday, classic winter hat. The pom poms are super cute! I would make it in a royal purple color.
