Where to Send Your Shawls

Win a Yarn Lover's Prize Pack with Your Donation!

The prayer shawl drive has ended - thanks to everyone who sent in crocheted and knitted shawls! With your help, we were able to collect 340 shawls to donate to Rush Medical Center!

We are no longer collecting prayer shawls, but feel free to contact Rush Medical Center for information on how you can donate to them directly. And congratulations to our random grand prize winner, Millie Gibson from Anchorage, AK!

Our Mission

AllFreeCrochet and AllFreeKnitting love making a difference through knit and crochet. We’ve hosted a number of different charity drives in the past, and we are excited to announce our next charity initiative - Prayer Shawls for Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL!

From November 1 - December 1, 2017, we will be collecting your prayer shawls to donate to Rush.

By crocheting or knitting a prayer shawl for someone in need, you will be helping provide a bit of comfort to those who need it most. The shawls often provide the patient warmth and a comforting embrace during difficult times. It lets them know that someone cares and it gives them hope of recovery and peace. Something so simple can be the brightest thing that has happened to the patient in some time, as many have often driven from great distances for treatment and have nothing comforting from home with them.

That's where you come in, knitters and crocheters: we need your help in providing patients at Rush with knit and crochet prayer shawls. Whether you work up a quick and simple one-color shawl or channel all the brightness of a rainbow into your design, think warm thoughts of peace and hope while you do it. Once you finish your design, send it over to us! We'll be collecting all of your knit and crochet shawls to donate.

Guide for Giving a Prayer Shawl
Have you ever wondered what a prayer shawl is or considered giving one to someone? This Guide for Giving a Prayer Shawl has some great tips, tricks, and advice for anyone who has been thinking about giving a prayer shawl to someone in need, as well as some thoughts on the prayer shawl history.

Shawl Requirements

  • Although we aren't requiring a certain size, color, or shape, be sure that the shawl is big enough to wrap around someone who may be sitting in a wheelchair or lying in a hospital bed. Both men and women will receive these shawls, so keep that in mind if you can't decide on a color.
  • Please avoid wool and other exotic yarns because these may cause allergic reactions. We recommend using cotton and acrylic yarns.
  • Attach a short note with a warm thought or prayer. Many of the patients like to know who made the shawl for them, so please be sure to add your first name and where you're from.

Shawl Pattern Inspiration

If you're at a loss for a crochet or knit shawl pattern, two of our favorite designers were nice enough to send us their patterns exclusively for this wonderful charity! You may work up any pattern you like, but these provide some great free options if you can't find anything else.

Duchess of Cambridge Prayer Shawl     On the Wings of a Prayer Shawl

For our crocheters, this Duchess of Cambridge Prayer Shawl (left) designed by Marie Segares is easy to memorize, which should allow you to focus on healing thoughts as you crochet it. You can customize the colors of this shawl, and the rectangular shape makes it incredibly versatile to wear snuggly.

For the knitters, the On the Wings of a Prayer Shawl (right) designed by Jessica Anderson is a quick and simple triangular shawl. The unique sections of textural stitches not only add interest, they also give you a chance to change up your thoughts, thus weaving more than one good vibe into the fibers of the shawl.

Love that this website hosts this event. We crochet enthusiasts can give to more than just our family and friends! Our hobby is so versatile and we can use it to make so many different projects for people in need.

May God continue to hold you in the palms of His hands and the circle of His arms.

"This too shall pass."

With God, all things are possible

i comfort myself by saying all is well over and over. all is well.

my favorite comforting thought was one my dad always said "God doesn't throw anything at you that you cant handle."

My favorite comforting thought is one that became precious to me as I battle cancer no matter what lies ahead, God has my back.

My favorite comforting thought comes from my late grandmother. She said, "Remember, regardless of what you are going through, kindness costs nothing."

I love the idea of this charity. Wish I had seen it earlier - I'm very slow! But I'm betting that even if I can't send it until later that Rush could find a home for a shawl at any time.

As long as it's postmarked by December 1st, we'd be happy to take it! If it's after that, please contact Rush for how you could donate to them as we won't always be collecting these shawls for them. :)

My favorite comforting thought is from Philippians 413 in the Bible. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. I sure have needed that in my life more than once!

The serenity prayer

what a nice project. Need a little more time thou.

Jesus said, "Never will I leave you, nor forsake you."

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have always lived by the thought - "there is ALWAYS a light at the end of every tunnel". It keeps me going no matter what life throws at me.

This is a great mission and a great calling to help participate in if you are able to do so. Prayer shawls provide a little comfort for those in need and we have all been there and needed some comfort every now and then. Make sure to read all the instructions so that your prayer shawl will be allowed.

I think what you are doing is wonderful and hope you continue bringing as much comfort to those in need as possible. One thing that I would like you to do is to put a notice out 6 - 10 months ahead to knitters and crocheters have some time to make some gifts. I am working and cannot devote a lot of time each day but given 6 - 10 months, I could possibly get more than one finished. Thank you.

Hi rphoule, I completely understand your concern - it takes a bit to crochet an entire prayer shawl. We only finalized this drive within the past few weeks, so we couldn't have announced it any earlier. You do have until the 1st of December to postmark your shawl in order to be entered to win the prize however, so there's still a good amount of time to work something up. :)

Do you take donations at any other time of the year from people not wanting to enter a contest?

Hi Cindy, We do not - we're only taking the donations for Rush during this time period to help out there cause. You could certainly reach out to Rush directly (through their website or Facebook) and donate directly to them! Thanks, Julia, AFC editor

What a beautiful idea. Thanks for doing this!

"Nothing disturb thee, nothing affright thee . . ." -- St. Teresa of Avila first read about her in college Spanish classes became my confirmation saint when I converted to Catholicism, and she's one of only 2 female Doctors of the Church. She was one amazing lady, and I'm sure she would have had her Reformed Carmelites making prayer shawls, too!
