INSTRUCTIONS:

ACORNS
With G, make pompoms in both small sizes included with pompom maker. Make one pompom for each Acorn you’d like to make.
Felting
Place finished pompoms into a clean pillowcase. Pin pillowcase closed. Wash pompom filled pillowcase by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. Remove pillowcase from machine. Remove pompoms from pillowcase and roll between your hands to shape. Allow pompoms to dry completely.
Acorn Caps
With crochet hook and A, B, C, D, E or F as desired, make a chain long enough to wrap around a felted pompom.
Join the last chain to the first with a sl st to make a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work an sc in each ch around, join with sl st to beg sc.

Depending on the size of your felted pompom, proceed to make a smaller cap or a larger cap following instructions below. Because finished size of pompoms will vary after felting, you should decide for each pompom whether you’d like to make a larger cap or smaller cap.

Smaller Cap
Rnd 2: Work sc3tog around – skipping one st more or less, or working Sc2tog if needed to finish rnd evenly.
Ch 3 (for stem) and cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Fasten off, then use tail to sew closed any spaces in crochet cap.

Larger Cap
Rnd 2: Rep Rnd 1 as for Smaller Cap.
Rnd 3: Work Sc2tog around – skipping one st more or less, or working sc3tog if needed to finish rnd evenly.
Ch 3 (for stem) and cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Fasten off, then use tail to sew closed any spaces in crochet cap.

FINISHING
Glue caps to felted pompoms.
Weave in ends.

When I find projects like this my first thought is, "What can I use these for?" It usually does not take me but a couple of minutes and I will find an answer. These little beauties will be adorable on a table for decor in a small bowl or even strewn across a table for Thanksgiving. The possibles are endless.

These clever little accents certainly surprised me. They arent made anything like how I had expected. Since the pompons are the only component thats felted, thats really the only time you need wool yarn. The caps could be worked in acrylic if desired. This pattern is available as a free download from Lion but youll have to sign up for an account if you dont already have one.
