Messy Bun Crochet Hat

Crochet Hat Instructions

Note: This hat is made from the bottom to top.

  1. Ch 61.

  2. Round 1: Hdc in the second chain from hook and in each across, sl st to the first st to join. (60 sts).

  3. Rounds 2-3: Ch 2, working in the back horizontal bar on stitch, hdc in each st, sl st to the first st to join.

  4. Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in each st.

  5. Rounds 5-6: Repeat Rounds 2-3.

  6. Round 7: Repeat Round 4.

  7. Rounds 8-9: Repeat Rounds 2-3.

  8. Round 10: Ch 1, sc, hdc 59, do not join.

  9. Rounds 11-14: working in the round, hdc in each st.

  10. Round 15: * Hdc 4, hdc dec, repeat from * around. (50 sts).

  11. Round 16: * Hdc 3, hdc dec, repeat from * around. (40 sts).

  12. Round 17: * Hdc 2, hdc dec, repeat from * around. (30 sts).

  13. Round 18: * Hdc, hdc dec, repeat from * around, sl st to the first st of round to join. (20 sts).

  14. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

  15. BONUSE: Crochet a Strap to go With Your Hat:
    Ch 21.
    Row 1: Sc in the second chain from hook and in each across. (20 sts)
    Rows 2-3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each st.
    Fasten off.

    Using the yarn needle, sew strap over sl st seam.

I love the look of this messy bun hat. However, I am wondering if anyone has made it longer? Or from the top to the bottom? That way, you would know if it was long enough. I like my hats to cover my ears, especially in the cold winters of Iowa! I think I will have a go at making this hat from the top to bottom, to see if it is big enough for me!

I love the royal purple color of this bun hat! This would make a great last-minute gift that is universally flattering and useful.
