Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch Tutorial

Tunisian crochet has many names but they all refer to the same technique that creates a fabric that closely resembles weaving and knitting.

This method of crochet uses a longer crochet hook with a stopper on one end or a crochet hook with a cord, to pick up loops in a forward pass and then work the loops off in a return pass.

Depending on the stitch, yarn, and hook size, the fabric may be very dense and thick or it could be lacey, light, and airy.

The Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch is a great beginner stitch because it is worked very similarly to the regular double crochet stitch.

This stitch is also very interesting because it can create different looks and textures, depending on how the hook is inserted into the stitches.

The swatch on the left was created by inserting the hook just like for a Tunisian simple stitch, but the swatch on the right was created by inserting the hook just like for a Tunisian knit stitch. They are very similar but the textures are different.

  1. and insert the hook into the next stitch.

You may insert the hook into the stitch however you like, but for this example, I am inserting the hook, just like for a Tunisian knit stitch, so I am inserting my hook between the front and back vertical bars of the next stitch.

Depending on the way you insert the hook, the texture will vary.
