Ruffle Double Strand Flops

Get creative by recycling your old flip flops and some leftover yarn. Using this free crochet pattern from Lion Brand you can make cute ruffle double strand flip flops. It's a beginner level pattern just in time for summer.

Beginner

Crochet HookK/10.5 or 6.5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Materials:

  • 760-134 Lion Cotton Yarn: (A) 1 Avocado ball
  • 760-145 Lion Cotton Yarn: (B) 1 Orchid ball
  • 760-159 Lion Cotton Yarn: (C) 1 Mustard ball
  • Lion Brand Crochet Hook - Size K-10.5
  • Large-Eye Blunt Needles (Set of 6)
  • Purchased flip flops

GAUGE:

10 single crochet = 4 in. (10 cm) with 2 strands of yarn held together. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STRAP WRAP
With 1 strand each of A and B held together, make a slip knot. Holding the strands across top of flip flop strap, insert hook under strap and yarn over, creating 2 loops on hook, yarn over again and pull strands through both loops - single crochet around strap made.
Continue working until strap is covered.

FINISHING
Ruffle
Join 1 strand each of A and C held together with slip stitch in first single crochet of Wrap.
Row 1: *Chain 3, slip stitch in next stitch; repeat from * across Wrap. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

During the summer, I have a few nieces and nephews that come to stay with me for a week. I take them to the local aquarium, beach and other similar outings. I love to give them something when they come and when they go home. I am making these for the girls and modifying the pattern to make for the boys. The boys flops will not be as frilly.

This is how you up-cycle an inexpensive item like a shower shoe. I see these in the local dollar stores all of the time and usually pass them by. Until I started seeing crochet patterns on how to make them into something spectacular. I love this one because of how easy it is to complete. I am adding this pattern to the collection.
