I have not made the butterfly yet, but I think that you need to start with 4 chains.

why hasnt this patteren been corrected? how many do you chain to start?

I totally agree!! It's the reason I can't get "into" crocheting.

I love the pink butterfly, it's VERY cute! I'd love to try making it someday when I have more experience reading patterns. Does it seem like patterns are written for experienced crocheters and knitters, or is it just me? I'd love ones that are written in clear and concise English for beginners with some kind of standard key available for abbreviations.
