"I decided that I needed a versatile hat so, I set myself to design one. It's fashionable and yet practical. This is an intermediate pattern that takes roughly 3 hours to complete. This hat can be made in various colors and sizes. Change the color to hunter orange, tan, or camouflage and viola' you have a practical fishing hat for your hubby! This is great for keeping the sun out of the eyes. These make great gifts!"

Intermediate

Crochet HookJ/10 or 6 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Finished Sizefits head circumference of 21-22" snugly

Instructions

Stitches used:

  • Magic ring
  • SC (single crochet)
  • dc (double crochet)
  • BLO (back loop only)
  • FPdc (front post double crochet)
  • BPdc (back post double crochet)
  • * * (pattern sequence
  • dc inc (double crochet increase)

Notes: chain 1 never counts as a stitch. Always finish each row by doing a slip stitch into the first stitch of each round. Always put the first stitch indicated in each row into the same chain 1 space.

  1. Do a magic ring, ch1

  2. ROW 1: do 12 dc into magic ring, sl st to join. pull ring tight before continuing. (12 dc)

  3. ROW 2: Ch 1, * 2 dc in each chain around, sl st to join. (24 dc)

  4. ROW 3: Ch 1, * 1 dc, dc inc* repeat around. sl st to join. (36 dc)

  5. ROW 4: Ch 1, * 1 dc in next 2 chains, dc inc* repeat around. Sl st to join (48 dc)

  6. ROW 5: Ch 1, *dc in next 3 chains, dc inc* repeat around. Sl st to join (60 dc)

  7. ROW 6: Ch 1, * dc in next 4 chains, dc inc* repeat around. Sl st to join. (72 dc)

  8. ROW 7: BLO ch1, * 1 dc in each chain* Sl st to join. (72 dc)

  9. ROW 8: Ch 1, * 1 dc in each chain* Sl st to join. (72 dc)

  10. ROW 9: Ch1, * 1 FPdc in first chain, 1 BP dc in next*, repeat around. Sl st to join. (72 double crochet posts made 36 front/36 back)

  11. ROWS 10-16 are repeat rows of row 9 (72 dc posts made. 36 fpdc/36bpdc)

  12. ROW 17: ch1, * 1 dc in next 5 chains, dc inc* repeat around. Sl st to join. (84 dc)

  13. ROW 18: Ch1, *1 dc in next 6 chains, dc inc* repeat around. Sl st to join. (96 dc)

  14. ROW 19: Ch 1, * 1 dc in next 7 chains, dc inc* repeat around. sl st to join. (108 dc)

  15. ROW 20: Ch 1, * 1 dc in next 8 chains, dc inc* repeat around. Sl st to join. (120 dc)

  16. ROW 21: Ch1, * 1 sc in each chain around. Sl st to join. Fasten off and weave in yarn ends.

  17. *****To make a hat band, just change color of yarn and join onto chain 1 in row 10-12 and then switch back to main color.

Edging

Add a crocheted flower or pretty pin to change the look!
