Happy Halloween Throw
Get your home ready for Halloween with this orange and black crocheted afghan. The Happy Halloween Throw will definitely add a festive touch to your living room. Kids will love curling up on the couch with this crochet blanket as they watch a scary movie or relax after a long night of trick-or-treating. This festive afghan is crocheted in strips and then sewn together. The appliques are made separately, painted, then sewn on.
Crochet HookJ/10 or 6 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
MATERIALS:
- RED HEART® Super Saver®: 4 skeins 312 Black A; 2 skeins each of 254 Pumpkin B and 368 Paddy Green C.
- Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 6mm [US J-10].
- Yarn needle; Fabric paint in red, black, green and white.

SIZE: Throw measures 47” (119 cm) x 58½” (149 cm).
NOTE: Throw is made in strips, then sewn together. Appliqués are made separately, painted, then sewn on.
GAUGE: 12 sts = 4” (10 cm); 14 rows = 4” (10 cm) in sc. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
THROW
Strips 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 (Make 5): With B, ch 16.
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 15 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.
Rep Row 2 until there are 18 rows completed.
[Change to A. Work 18 rows sc. Change to B.
Work 18 rows sc.] 5 times.
Fasten off. There are a total of 11 color blocks in each strip.
Strips 2, 4, 6, 8 (Make 4): With A, ch 16.
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 15 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.
Rep Row 2 until there are 18 rows completed.
[Change to C. Work 18 rows sc. Change to A.
Work 18 rows sc.] 5 times. Fasten off. There are a total of 11 color blocks in each strip.
Sew strips together following assembly diagram (in materials list). Weave in ends.
EDGING
Round 1: With right side facing, attach A at top right-hand corner; ch 1, 3 sc in corner, sc across top edge, 3 sc in corner, sc evenly down side, 3 sc in corner, sc across foundation ch edge, 3 sc in corner, sc up last side; join with a slip st in first sc; TURN.
Rounds 2 and 3 (Wrong Side): Ch 1, sc in each sc around and work 3 sc in center corner sc; join to first sc.
TURN at end of Round 3.
Round 4: *Ch 2, slip st in 2nd ch from hook, skip next sc, slip st in next 2 sc; repeat from * around. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
APPLIQUES
Pumpkins (Make 10): With B, ch 3; join with a slip st in first ch to form ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in ring; join with a slip st in first sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around; join – 16 sc.
Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in sc, 2 sc in next sc] 8 times; join – 24 sc.
Round 4: Ch 1, [sc in 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 8 times; join – 32 sc.
Round 5: Ch 1, [sc in 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 8 times; join – 40 sc.
Round 6: Slip st in each sc around. Fasten off.
Paint face as desired on pumpkin with black fabric paint. Sew pumpkins on Throw following assembly diagram for placement.
Cat Face (Make 6): With A, work same as for pumpkin until Round 4 is complete.
Round 5: *Ch 4, slip st into 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, dc in next ch, skip join, skip next 2 sc, slip st in next 6 sc; repeat from * once; slip st in each st around. Fasten off.
Paint eyes on face with green, let dry, then paint center of eye with black. Paint nose with black, let dry, then paint whiskers with glow. Paint mouth with red. Sew Bat faces on Throw according to diagram.
Bat (Make 9)
Head: With A, work same as for pumpkin until Round 1 is complete.
Round 2: Ch 2, slip st in 2nd ch from hook – picot, skip join, skip next sc, slip st in next 3 sc, work picot, skip next sc, slip st in each st around. Fasten off.
Paint 2 eyes on head with red.
Wings: With A, ch 16.
Round 1: Slip st in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, (sl st, picot, sl st) in last ch, working across opposite side of foundation ch, slip st in next 2 ch, picot, skip next ch, slip st in next 7 ch, picot, skip next ch, slip st in last 3 ch, picot.
Row 2: Working across first sts of Round 1, slip st in first 3 sts, picot, skip next tr, slip st in next 7 sts, picot, skip next tr, slip st in last 3 sts.
Fasten off.
Sew head onto wings.
Sew bats on Throw following assembly diagram for placement.
