How to Crochet a Star Stitch:

  1. Chain an even number of chain stitches and add 1.

  2. In the second chain from the hook, insert your hook and pull up a loop.

  3. Go to the next chain from the hook, insert, and pull up a loop.

  4. Repeat Step 3 until you have 6 loops on your hook.

Note: You want to keep the loops loose. Tug on them a bit each time you add one to make sure they are aligned and aren't tight against the hook.

  5. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops.

  6. To set that, chain 1.

  7. When you chained 1, you created a little hole. Insert your hook into the hole, or the eye of your star, and pull up.

Note: Again, while you make loops, tug on them so that they aren't tight on the hook.

  8. Your next stitch will be in between the posts of the last 2 loops that you pulled up in that star previously. Yarn over and pull up a loop (you will have three loops on the hook).

  9. Your next stitch (fourth loop) will be where you worked last in the chain, insert your hook and pull up a loop.

  10. Repeat Step 9 in the next 2 available stitches (to create the fifth and sixth loops).

  11. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, as you did in Step 5

  12. Chain 1/yarn over and pull up to set.

  13. Repeat Steps 7–12 for as many star stitches as your pattern calls for.
