Jute Hemp Crochet Coasters

"This is a free crochet pattern for quick and easy coasters made with jute hemp. If you first time crocheting with jute hemp, you probably feel a little bit different because the jute hemp cord is rougher than yarn. It may take some time to finish one coaster even it is a very simple flat circle to crochet with 3 rounds. But the final result is amazingly beautiful and useful too. Add a nice finishing touch with Crab st (Reverse Single Crochet) edging using scrap yarns. I hope you enjoy and try."

These coasters are easy to work up, but the designer is right about hemp being a very different material to work with. Im a long time macram-er, so Im very familiar with jute. Since it tends to be so much stiffer than yarn, Ive actually found it easier to soften the jute by rolling or even working some crochet strips and then unraveling them.

I didnt realize jute hemp came in any color other than the traditional tan/brown. I usually just use it for tying sets of my dishcloths/washcloths together to give it a little boho look. I am really intrigued by the colors of this hemp. The designer shows that it is sold on eBay and Amazon, but does anyone know of any traditional brick and mortar stores that sell it in colors?

I haven't seen anything other than garden twine at the Dollar Tree. I haven't tried Walmart or other farm supply stores.
