These are so cute and yes, turn them upside down and they would be a great apple shape as well. If you really want to detail them out, you can add some yarn to indicate the lines on the pumpkin. You could also embroider a series of Jack oLantern faces (all different) like emoji. If you only go through the first layer, you can make them reversible, too.

Darling! It's funny, but if you just changed the color from the pumpkin orange to an apple read you'd have yourself apple coasters, in a simplified manner. To continue with the theme, how about following the basics of the coaster and continue in the round to make a large hot pad or two for your Thanksgiving table? Or an even bigger one to use as a centerpeice on the kitchen table! Just follow the basics of increasing in the round.
