  • 5" (13cm) square of cardboard
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, (first skipped 3-ch count as dc), dc in each ch across – 221 (241, 261, 281) dc.

Begin Mesh Pattern

  1. Rows 2-3: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), turn, dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc] to last dc, dc in last dc.

  2. Rows 4-5: Ch 3, turn, dc in next dc, [dc in ch-1 space, dc in next dc] to last dc, dc in last dc. Repeat Rows 2-5 for Mesh pattern for a total of 7 (8, 9, 10) repeats, ending with Row 4.

Shape Neck Opening

  1. Next Row: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 77 (85, 93, 101) dc, mark last st, slip st in each of next 65 (69, 73, 77) dc, dc in last 78 (86, 94, 102) dc.

  2. Next Row: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 77 (85, 93, 101) dc, ch 65 (69, 73, 77), dc in marked st, dc in each dc to end.

  3. Next Row: Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc and ch across – 221 (241, 261, 281) dc. Beginning with Row 2, work in Mesh pattern for a total of 7 (8, 9, 10) repeats from neck opening, ending with Row 4.

  4. Last Row: Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across. Fasten off.

Finishing

  1. Fold piece in half, lining up side edges for bottom edge. Mark each side of folded edge for shoulder. Measure down 7 (8, 9, 10)" [18 (20.5, 23, 25.5)cm] from marked shoulder edge and mark for armhole. Measure up 6" [15cm] from lower edge and mark. Sew between markers on each side to create a side seam. Weave in ends.

Drawstring Cords

  1. Leaving long ends for attaching tassels, chain 2 cords, each 34 (36, 38, 40)" [86 (91, 96, 101)cm] long. Fasten off. Starting at one side edge, half way up, weave one cord in and out of ch-spaces across front. Repeat to weave second cord in corresponding row of back.

Tassels (make 4)

  1. Wrap yarn around 5" [12 cm] cardboard 10 times. Cut two pieces of yarn 4-6" [10-15cm] long. Slip one piece under all strands at upper edge of cardboard. Pull tightly and knot securely near strands. Cut yarn loops at lower edge of cardboard. Wrap second piece tightly around loops, 1" [2.5cm] below top knot to form Tassel neck. Knot securely; thread ends onto needle and weave ends to center of Tassel. Trim Tassel ends evenly. Tie one Tassel to each end of each Drawstring Cord.
