PLUS! How to Crochet a Hat - Tips!

There are 3 different ways to crochet a hat: top-down, bottom-up, and flat. The first two worked in the round, and the other is worked side to side, in rows. If you’re comfortable with increases, you can learn how to crochet a hat in the round very easily, but otherwise you can crochet a hat without a magic circle.

Are you still new to crochet? Don’t worry! This guide will show you how to crochet a hat for beginners in no time - start with the bottom-up crochet hat and then, once you’re comfortable with increases, go with the top-down design.

How to Crochet a Hat, Step-by-Step:

Before you get started, there are two measurements you should get - your head circumference and your hat length. Your best bet is to get actual measurements of the person who'll be wearing the hat, but there are approximate standard measurements in a chart, below, that can help!

  1. Head Circumference: To get the head circumference, use a tape measure (or you can use a piece of yarn and then compare it to a ruler) and wrap it around the head, right at the middle of the forehead.

  2. Hat Length: Using a tape measure or a length of yarn, hold measure the distance from the top and center of your head down to the side, right to the base of the ear.

Now you're ready to make that hat! Check out our extensive guide on how to crochet a hat by clicking on the image shown below!

These are just too great. It's pattern after pattern of wonderful designs. I really like the summer hats. The blue one with the flower is going to be next on my to do list. It's not that hard, takes very little yarn and it really doesn't look like its crochet!

This is a HUGE collection most of which are either Beginner patterns or are Easy enough for an experienced Beginner. Theres such a wide variety of styles, too. Ive either worked many of these patterns personally or taught them as a class or individual project. It would be great if these were all in one downloadable ebook (hint, hint)! As it is, Ill bookmark this page so I can look at each hat later.

I love hats with ear flaps and animal ear hats!

The snowboarder slouchy hat is so cute! I will be making that a project this spring

I haven't crocheted many hats since my boys are grown up now. I used to crochet them beanies and long hats that would flop over and hang down with a pompom on the end. Now I want to make a few of the bun hats. That is my favorite style.

I love hats with all sorts of pompoms because they are fun and have lots of personality and they also look youthful. I also like hats in bright and vibrant colors.

I love the hats with floppy brims and flowers for summer ! So pretty and practical!

I prefer beanies

I like the slouchy hats. You see them everywhere.

The beanie is my absolute favourite! I mostly love that I can wear them all year round being in a colder climate country it's always a bonus when you find something that you can use for every season. The color possibilities are endless with each design. Really gives you a chance to make the pattern your own ! I even used left over yarns (just some black white greys that I had laying around) good way to get your money's worth

At the top of this article are three images of people wearing hats or a hat. The one on the left, the image of the man holding the child... Which hat pattern is the hat he's wearing? I can't tell just from looking at the patterns and I'm interested in making that hat.
