  • Crochet Hook: 4mm [US G-6]
  • Yarn needle

Notes

Directions are for an Infant. Changes for a Toddler are in parentheses. To change color in a slip stitch, insert hook in indicated stitch, drop working color and pick up new color, draw new color through loops on hook. Fasten off old color. SPECIAL STITCHES FPdc (front post double crochet) = Yo, insert hook from front to back to front again, around post of indicated st, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice. Skip the stitch directly behind the FPdc before making the next stitch.

Hat

Beginning at crown with A, ch 5; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring. Round 1 (RS): Ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch-2 space), [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 4 (5) times, 2 dc in ring; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-5, slip st in next ch-2 space, changing to B5 (6) ch-2 spaces. Round 2: With B, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-2 space, (sc, ch 3, sc) in center dc of next 3-dc group, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space, (sc, ch 3, sc) in center dc of next 3-dc group] 4 (5) times; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3, slip st in next dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, changing to C5 (6) ch-2 spaces and 5 (6) ch-3 spaces. Round 3: With C, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-2 space,(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-3 space, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-3 space] 4 (5) times; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3, slip st in next dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, changing to D10 (12) ch-2 spaces. Round 4: With D, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-2 space; skip next 2 dc, [dc in space before next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space, skip next 2 dc] 9 (11) times, dc space before beginning ch-3; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3, slip st in next dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, changing to A. Mittens (Make 2)

With D, ch 4. Round 1: Work 11 dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch-3 counts as first dc); join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch12 dc. Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in same st as join, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-318 dc. Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-324 dc. Round 4: Ch 3, dc in each dc around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3. Rounds 5 and 6: Repeat Round 4, changing to A in last st of Round 6. Round 7 (Beginning Cuff): With A, ch 3, skip next 2 dc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc, skip next 2 dc**, dc in next dc, skip next 2 dc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3, slip st in each of next 2 dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, changing to B4 ch-2 spaces. Round 8: With B, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-2 space, [skip next 2 dc, FPdc around next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space] 3 times, FPdc around next dc (beginning ch-3 of previous round); join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3, slip st in next dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, changing to C. Round 9: With C, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-2 space, FPdc around next FPdc, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space, FPdc around next FPdc] 3 times; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3 **, slip st in next dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, changing to D. Round 10: With D, repeat Round 9, ending at ** DO NOT CHANGE COLOR. Last Round: Repeat Edging Round of Hat32 sts (including sl sts). Fasten off. FINISHING Weave in all ends. Mitten Ties (make 2) With C, ch 70. Fasten off. Tassel Cut one 4 strand each of A, B, C, and D. Fold the 4 strands of yarn in half. Insert hook in one end of tie and into fold of strands. Draw fold through to form a loop (do not pull the strands all the way through, just the folded end). Insert ends of strands through loop and pull to tighten. Trim ends evenly. Repeat for tassel on other end of tie. Weave tie through Round 6 of Mitten and tie ends in a bow.

Flower

Top Layer With A, ch 5; join with slip st to form a ring. Ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 5] 8 times; join with slip st in first sc8 sc and 8 ch-5 spaces. Fasten off. Middle Layer With C, ch 5; join with slip st to form a ring. Ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 9] 10 times; join with slip st in first sc10 sc and 10 ch-9 spaces. Fasten off. Bottom Layer With D, ch 5; join with slip st to form a ring. Ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 11] 12 times; join with slip st in first sc12 sc and 12 ch-11 spaces. Fasten off. Sew flower layers together and sew flower to top of hat. Using yarn needle and a double strand of B, embroider a French knot through center of flower.
