Lucky Horseshoe Granny Square

By: Michelle Cohen

"Saddle up, this intermediate pattern is a showstopper. The Horseshoe Granny Square works up in six rounds to produce a finished square of just over 4 inches, using worsted weight yarn on a 5mm hook. Gauge is flexible depending on your materials. The pattern uses standard U.S. crochet terms: single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, chains, and slip stitches. No specialty stitches required, but confident stitch counting and placement are essential throughout. Construction is uniquely built in two stages. A small border-color foundation piece is worked first to create the inner space of the horseshoe, then the horseshoe motif is worked on top in a contrasting color. The border color is then picked up again to square the motif out with a round of mixed-height stitches and a final double crochet round. A surface crochet outline in the horseshoe color sharpens the motif's edges, and nail hole details are added with a tapestry needle in a third accent color. Optional finishing touches include a whip stitch border for rustic charm and an appliqué flower for a Triple Crown-worthy look. You'll need two to three colors of yarn, a hook, scissors, and a tapestry needle."
