My mother was the hat wearer in the family. She would have loved this salt grass beach hat and would have demanded it be made in more than one color. The directions have a few stitches used that a beginner may have issue with but I am sure you can find lessons on line to get it done.

I can not wait to make this pattern. I recently retired and have big plans to visit the coast of North Carolina and stroll the beaches when ever the mood strikes. It is important to protect the skin and I love this fashion accessory for just that.

At first glance I was thinking this was going to be ridiculous to wear at the beach. It would be too hot. But then I read the instructions and saw what it was made from and I understand it now. It won't be hot at all. It's a very easy pattern that will make up quickly for your beach side vacation.

This project reminds me of Trixies hat in the final Series 7 episode of Call the Midwife. I wont post any spoilers since it hasnt aired in the US yet, but suffice it to say shes in Italy on holiday. These hats are perfect for working in the garden, too, since the big floppy brim is the perfect protection from the sun! I actually have a salt grass hat very much like this one.

Yes, I have seen my fair share of the beautiful sea oats and grasses that protect the sand dunes the designer talks about because before moving to Florida, I lived in North Carolina for many, many years. This hat is made from Raffia to mimic the sea grass texture. Be sure to hold on to it because the breeze is strong on the beach.

If you are a "fancy" lady, then this wide brimmed hat is for you. It entails afixing a length of wire to create the brim. You can bend it as needed while you wear it out on the lake, the farmer's market or poolside, of course. There are four parts to the pattern- the magic ring top, the v-stitch body, the brim area and then the trim stitching leading on to the wire. That is it!
