Waterlily Waltz Knit-look Headband
"This pattern and tutorial will teach you the crochet "knit stitch", also called the "waistcoat stitch", or center single crochet. I love the look of knit fabric, but my knitting skills run quite a bit behind my crochet skills, so the crochet "knit stitch" provides a workable solution to this dilemma, and is great for headbands, bags, and purses, or any project that needs a thicker more durable fabric. I should also note that when worked in the round, it truly does take on the appearance of knit fabric, much more so than it does in rows, but hopefully you will still enjoy this project. A short video on how to do the stitch is included."
NotesThe crochet knit stitch is an easy one to master. The reason I give this design an "intermediate" rating is because of the flower. You are welcome to substitute my flower with a different one if you wish.
Crochet HookF/5 or 3.75 mm hook, H/8 or 5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Crochet GaugeFor headband: 7 stitches in 2 inches. Gauge is unimportant for flower.
Finished SizeHeadband (adult): 3 ½” across by about 21” long, Flower: 4” across

- 30-35 yards Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool in “Nature’s Brown”
- 60-75 yards Lion Brand Wool-ease in "Natural Heather"
- (Flower) 3.75mm (F) hook
- (Headband) 5mm (H) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
- 1 inch button
- yarn needle
- scissors
- thread
- sewing needle
- 3 small wooden beads

At first glance of the picture I thought this accessory was a belt and then I read the title to discover it is a headband. A little disappointed at first but I still love this piece. The knit stitch is really a new one on me and after viewing the tutorial, I am confident my headband will be just as impressive. The flower sets it off and it is not all that complicated to crochet.

What an impressive headband. The designer really outdid her self with this one. This color scheme puts me in the mind of fall or winter but with a change of yarn color this could easily be seen as a summer headband. Thanks for the free pattern.

The best thing about working up a project with the Knit or Waistcoat stitch is the marvelous blank canvas it creates. Its perfect for embroidery, cross stitch, overlay stitch or even fabric painting. Its not a difficult stitch but is a little tricky until you get the hang of spotting where to insert the hook for the next stitch. The designer provides both a photo tutorial to help guide the crafter (the video is no longer available).

Now this I like! It is very similar to a free-style type crochet headband that I saw at a Renaissance Fair recently. I will definitely be saving this pattern to use as a base and to help me practice on my free style crochet skills. I love the accent flower embellishment and will be using that on a different project.
