February 2021 Mystery Crochet Along

Join us every week in February for a mysterious crochet along that results in an exciting trendy project!

It's no secret that crochet alongs (CALs) are incredibly popular. Like a book club, working up a project in parts is exciting and less stressful than doing it all at once. Adding to the excitement is the mystery factor of our February 2021 Mystery Crochet Along.

We've joined forces with the incredibly talented Marie Segares from Underground Crafter to bring you this crochet along, so you know the end result will be as gorgeous as it is fun to crochet.

But here's the twist: you won't know what you're crocheting right away! Looking for a hint? It's been a huge crochet trend for the last few months.

Our mystery crochet along is not one to miss. Join us every Wednesday in February for each exciting new installment of an exclusive pattern by the wonderfully skilled Marie Segares.

How do I join? In order to be updated with the latest set of instructions every week, make sure that you're subscribed to the Hooked on Crochet newsletter from AllFreeCrochet, and keep an eye on your inbox! We'll be sure to send you an email each week to bring you the next step in the crochet along.

PLUS! Don't forget to share with us your progress every week in the comments down below. We can't wait to see how yours turn out!

Week 1: Welcome, Supplies, and Gauge Swatch

Welcome to the mystery crochet along. I’m Marie from Underground Crafter and I’m excited to be crocheting with you all! In this post, I’m including a complete supply list and schedule for the crochet along, with instructions for checking your gauge.

At the end of our crochet along, you will have a warm and cozy project that would be great for wearing, gifting, or donating.

This is a crochet project that an advanced beginner can complete.

To complete this project you’ll need to know:

  1. Basic crochet stitches including chain, single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch. Learn them all here!
Supplies Needed:
  1. Approximately 2,230 yards (2,039 meters) in any medium weight yarn – I used 9 skeins in Lion Brand Jeans in 110 Classic.
  2. US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  3. Locking stitch markers – at least 5.
  4. Yarn needle.
  5. Tools for measuring and cutting.
Pattern for Gauge:
5 shells = 4” (10 cm) in pattern
Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet terms)
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
pf – 3-repeat puff stitch – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop] 3 times in same st, yo and draw through all 7 loops on hook.
A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available here.
shell – shell stitch – (dc, ch 1, pf) in same st.
A helpful video tutorial for this shell stitch pattern is available here.
sp – space
st – stitch
yo – yarn over
* Repeat instructins after asterisk as indicated.
() Stitches between parentheses are wrked into same stitch or space.
  1. To work gauge swatch, ch 23.
  2. Row 1: Turn, skip 4 ch (counts as first dc + ch-1 sp), pf in next st, *skip 2 ch, shell in next st; repeat from * across to last 3 ch, skip 2 ch, dc in last ch.
  3. Row 2: Turn, ch 4 (counts as first dc + ch-1 sp), pf in same st, *skip pf, skip ch-1 sp, shell in next dc; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, skip pf, skip ch-1 sp, dc in top of third ch from previous Row.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until swatch measures approximately 5” (13 cm) long.
  5. Measure your gauge.

Troubleshooting Your Swatch Gauge:

  1. If you have less than 5 shells across when measuring 4” (10 cm) wide, your stitches are too large. You may want to go down a hook size to a US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook. Or, you can continue with the crochet hook and tension you have, but your project will be wider than the sample and your yarn requirements may be different.

  2. If you have more than 5 shells across when measuring 4” (10 cm) wide, your stitches are too small. You may want to go up a hook size to a US Size K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook. Or, you can continue with the crochet hook and tension you have, but your project will be narrower than the sample and your yarn requirements may be different.

  3. You can find out more about crochet gauge here and hook sizes here.

Finishing:

By now, you’ve probably realized you are making a belted, puff stitch pocket shawl!

With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails from foundation chain of each Pocket (Small Rectangles from Part 3/Pattern Part 2) onto the wrong side of Pocket.

Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from end of first Pocket. Position Pocket in center of first double crochet section (between stitch markers 1 and 2) on right side. Use pins or additional locking stitch markers to pin Pocket into position.
With long yarn tail, sew Pocket to shawl around 3 sides (the sides of the rows and the foundation chain), leaving the final row edge unseamed. Repeat for second Pocket, positioning between stitch marker 7 and Final Row.

With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails.

Finished measurements: 14.25” (36 cm) x 75” (190.5 cm)

Spray block if necessary. You can find out more about blocking here.

To wear the shawl with the Belt (Long Rectangle from Part 3/Pattern Part 2), drape the shawl around your neck with the Pockets facing the front.

Make sure the short ends are even. Tie the Belt around your waist or at your preferred location to keep the shawl in position.
