Tunisian Crochet Brioche Stitch Tutorial

Expand your Tunisian crochet skill set with this Tunisian brioche stitch guide! Learn 1-color and 2-color techniques.

Tunisian Crochet is a form of crochet that combines crochet and knitting to mimic knitted or woven textures. This look can be achieved by using a long crochet hook, a crochet hook with a cord, or a crochet hook with no handle and sometimes double ended crochet hooks are used for working in the round and other techniques.

Every row of Tunisian Crochet consists of a forward pass which is worked from right to left and then a return pass which is worked from left to right. The work is rarely ever turned and the right side of the work is almost always facing for most tunisian crochet techniques.

The Tunisian Crochet Brioche Stitch takes advantage of the return pass and uses it as the background texture which helps the stitches to pop or seem puffier than normal. Brioche stitches seem to stand out and are easily noticed. Using a secondary color in the return pass adds another interesting spin on this stitch. Materials

Universal Yarn Deluxe Bulky Superwash in Classic Pink and Smoke Heather
100% Superwash Wool, 100g/106yds, Bulky Weight
Size K (6.5 mm) Cruella Deville Furls Crochet 12” Tunisian Hook or a hook with no handle to practice

Tunisian Brioche Stitch Tutorial

One Color Version:

Multiple of 2.

Step 1. Chain 14.

Row 1: Forward Pass:

Step 2. Starting in the second chain from the hook, pick up a loop in each chain across. =14 loops

Row 1: Return Pass:

Step 3. Yarn over,

Step 4. and pull through 1 loop,

Step 5. yarn over,

Step 6. and pull through 2 loops on the hook.

Step 7. Repeat steps 5-6 until 1 loop remains on the hook.

Row 2: Forward Pass:

Step 8. The first loop on the hook counts as a tunisian knit stitch.

Step 9. Tunisian simple stitch into the next stitch by inserting the hook from right to left behind the next front vertical bar (image 1), yarn over (image 2), and pull up a loop. (image 3)

Step 10. Tunisian twisted simple stitch into the next stitch by inserting the hook from left to right behind the next front vertical bar (image 1 & 2), yarn over (image 3), and pull up a loop. (image 4)

Step 11. Repeat steps 9-10 until 1 stitch remains.

Step 12. Tunisian knit stitch into the last stitch by inserting the hook behind the last 2 vertical bars (image 1), yarn over (image 2), and pull up a loop. (image 3) =14 loops

Row 2: Return Pass:

Step 13. Repeat steps 3-7.

Step 14. Repeat Row 2 (steps 8-13) until the desired length.

Tunisian Brioche Stitch - Two Color Tutorial

The Tunisian Brioche Stitch in two colors is very similar to the Tunsiian Brioche Stitch in one color. Changing color in the return pass and carrying each color across makes the stitch super simple yet beautiful and different than the one color version.

This stitch is worked with two colors of yarn. The main color is the first color of yarn used (during the forward pass) and it creates the color of the stitches. The contrast color is the second color of yarn used (during the return pass) and it creates the color of the background texture.

Both techniques can easily be worked in the round.

Multiple of 2.

Step 1. Using the main color of yarn, chain 14.

Row 1: Forward Pass:

Step 2. Starting in the second chain from the hook, pick up a loop in each chain across. =14 loops

Row 1: Return Pass:

Step 3. Yarn over with the contrast color of yarn,

Step 4. and pull through one loop.

Step 5. Yarn over,

Step 6. and pull through 2 loops.

Step 7. Carry the main color of yarn across by crossing it over the contrast color,

Step 8. Pick the contrast color back up,

Step 9. yarn over,

Step 10. and pull through 2 loops on the hook.

Step 11. Repeat steps 5-6 across until 2 loops remain on the hook, but continue carrying the main yarn across by repeating steps 7-10 every 5 stitches or so.

Step 12. Drop the contrast color and yarn over with the main color of yarn,

Step 13. and pull through the last 2 loops on the hook.

This is what the back of the work should look like.

Row 2: Forward Pass: (Steps 8-12 of one color version above)

Step 14. tks (loop on the hook), *tunisian simple stitch into the next stitch, tunisian twisted simple stitch into the next stitch. Repeat from the * across but carry the contrast yarn every 5 stitches or so by crossing the contrast color of yarn over the main color of yarn. (image below)

Step 15. Pick the main color of yarn up (image below), and continue repeating from the * across until 1 st remains.

Step 16. Put a tunisian knit stitch into the last stitch by following step 12 from the one color version tutorial above.

This is what the back of the work should look like.

Row 2: Return Pass:

Step 17. Repeat steps 3-13.

Step 18. Repeat Row 2 (steps 14-16) until the desired length.
