Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

MATERIALS:

  • Red Heart Super Saver: 4 skeins 316 Soft White A, 1 skein 312 Black B, and 2 skeins 341 Light Grey C
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hook: 6.5mm [US K-10]
  • Yarn needle

SIZE:
Throw measures 52” long x 55” wide (132 x 139.5 cm)

GAUGE:
1 motif = 3¼” long x 3½” wide (8.5 x 9 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

NOTES:
1.Throw is made from 225 motifs. White motifs are worked back and forth in rows; black motifs are made in joined rounds with right side facing.
2. All motifs must be equal in width. There may be a slight difference in height between white and black motifs, so ease vertical edges to fit when sewing.
3. Motifs are arranged into 15 strips of 15 motifs each and sewn together.
4. Border is added after motifs are sewn together.


THROW
White Motif (make 183)
With A, ch 11.
Row 1 (wrong side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, [sc in next ch, hdc in next ch] 4 times, turn—10 sts.
Rows 2–8: Ch 1, sc in first st, hdc in next st, [sc in next st, hdc in next st] 4 times, turn. Fasten off.

Edging
Round 1 (right side): With right side facing, join C with slip st in first sc of last row, ch 1, slip st in same st as join, slip st in next 8 sts, (slip st, ch 1, slip st) in last st; working across ends of first side, slip st in each row; working in opposite side of foundation ch, (slip st, ch 1, slip st) in first ch, slip st in next 8 ch, (slip st, ch 1, slip st) in last ch; working across ends of other side, slip st in each row; join with slip st in first slip st. Fasten off, leaving 12” (30.5 cm) tail for sewing.

Black Motif (make 42)
With B , ch 4; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 (right side): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 15 dc in ring; join with slip st in top of beginning ch—16 dc.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, [ch 2, skip next st, sc in next st] 7 times, ch 2; join with slip st in first sc—8 sc and 8 ch-2 spaces.
Round 3: Slip st in first ch-2 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch-2 space, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, 2 dc in next ch-2 space] 3 times; join with slip st in top of beginning ch—32 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces.

Edging
Round 1 (right side): With right side facing, join C with slip st in any ch-2 space, ch 1, slip st in same ch-2 space, slip st in next 8 dc,[(slip st, ch 1, slip st) in next ch-2 space, slip st in next 8 dc] 3 times; join with slip st in first slip st. Fasten off, leaving 12” (30.5 cm) tail for sewing.

ASSEMBLY
With right sides facing, arrange motifs as ,shown in assembly diagram. Position each, motif with 12” (30.5 cm) tail at upper rightcorner. With wrong sides together and using end tails, whipstitch motifs together through both sets of loops of vertical edges, easing edges to fit evenly, to make 15 strips of 15 motifs each. With wrong sides together and C, whipstitch strips together across long edges.

Border
Model is shown with 12 stitches in each motif across top and bottom edges and 11stitches in each motif across side edges in Round 1. So that the border lays flat, work as many stitches as needed in each motif edge.

Round 1 (right side): With right side facing, join C with slip st in ch-1 space in any outer corner, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-1 space, working in back loops only, [dc in each slip st to ch-1 space in next outer corner, 3 dc in ch-1 space] 3 times, dc in each slip st to first ch-1 space; join with slip st in top of beginning ch.
Round 2: Ch 3, 3 dc in next st, [dc in each st to center dc of next 3-dc group, 3 dc in center dc] 3 times, dc in each st to beginning ch; join with slip st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
