  • Crochet hook, size 4.50 mm (G) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Pattern

First Motif

  1. With crochet hook, ch 6, join with a sl st to form a ring.

  2. Rnd 1:  Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 15 sc in ring, join with a sl st in 1st sc.

  3. Rnd 2:  Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in base of ch-1, (ch 3, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc) 7 times, ch 3, sl st in first sc – 8 ch-3 spaces.

  4. Rnd 3:  Sl st in 1st ch-3 space, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same ch-3 space, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp, rep from * 6 times more, ch 1, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.

  5. Rnd 4:  Sl st in 1st sc and ch-1 space, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same space, * ch 5, skip (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), sc in next ch-1 space, ch 5, skip (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), ** (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, rep from * twice more, then rep from * to ** once more, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.  Fasten off.

  6. Note:  Motif is a square.  Each corner is a ch-3 space between 2 pairs of 2 dc’s.  There are 2 ch-5 spaces with a sc between them along each side.

Second Motif (and following motifs)

  1. Work same as first motif until Rnd 3 has been completed.

  2. Rnd 4 (Joining Rnd):  Sl st in 1st sc and ch-1 space, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 5, skip (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), sc in next ch-1 space, ch 5, skip (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), 2 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, holding WS of motifs tog, sc in corner ch-3 space of first motif, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-1 space of second motif,  ch 2, sc in ch-5 space of first motif, ch 2, on second motif, skip (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), sc in next ch-1 space, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 space of first motif, ch 2, on second motif, skip (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), ch 2 in next ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in corner ch-3 space of first motif, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-1 space of second motif, complete second motif same as first motif – 2 motifs are joined along 1 edge.

  3. Continue to work motifs, joining in the same manner until you have a strip of 16 motifs joined as shown on diagram.  As you work from here, motifs will be joined on 2 sides in same manner as before.  Make a total of 184 motifs joined as shown on schematic.

Finishing

  1. With RS facing, join yarn at any corner and work in sc around entire outer edge, working 3 sc’s in each corner.  Join with a sl st in first sc.  Fasten off.
