Contemporary Classic Crochet Rug

Add a modern touch to your home decor with this Contemporary Classic Crochet Rug. Made with Red Heart Super Saver Chunky yarn, this free crochet pattern works up in the blink of an eye. This crochet rug measures 38 inches wide and 24 inches long when complete. The beige and white yarn shown here would look great in practically anyone's home, but you're free to choose any two colors that blend or contrast with your own personal decor. Be sure to use a non-slip rug for safety if placing this on hard wood floors.

MATERIALS:

  • RED HEART® Super Saver Chunky®: 3 skeins 334 Buff A and 1 skein 311 White B
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 9mm [M-13 US]
  • Yarn needle

GAUGE: 9 sts = 4” (10 cm) in pattern; 11 rows = 4” (10 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

SIZE: Rug measures 38” wide and 24” long (96.5 x 61 cm)

Special Stitches
bpdc (back post double crochet) = Yarn over, insert hook from back side of work to front and to back again around the post of indicated stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (1 loop on hook). Skip the stitch in front of the bpdc.
fpdc (front post double crochet) = Yarn over, insert hook from front side of work to back and to front again around post of indicated stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (1 loop on hook).
 

Notes
1. When instructed to work into a stitch or space “2 rows below”, work into the row numbered 2 less than the current row. For example, if you are working Row 5, a stitch “2 rows below” is in Row 5 – 2 = Row 3.
2. To work treble (triple) crochet in single crochet 2 rows below, insert hook through vertical front loops of single crochet, do not work around post of the stitch.
3. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Cut old color.

Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—78 st.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc; change to B, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, sc in back loops only of next 2 sc, *sc in next 4 sc, sc in back loops only of next 2 sc; repeat from * to last 2 sc, sc in last 2 sc, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc; change to A, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, tr in front loops only of next 2 sc 2 rows below, *sc in next 4 sc, tr in front loops only of next 2 sc 2 rows below; repeat from * to last 2 sc, sc in last 2 sc, turn.
Rows 6–8: Ch 1, sc in each sc; change to B at end of Row 8, turn.
Row 9: Ch 1, sc in first 5 sc, sc in back loops only of next 2 sc, *sc in next 4 sc, sc in back loops only of next 2 sc; repeat from * to last 5 sc, sc in last 5 sc, turn.
Row 10: Ch 1, sc in each sc; change to A, turn.
Row 11: Ch 1, sc in first 5 sc, tr in front loops only of next 2 sc 2 rows below, *sc in next 4 sc, tr in front loops only of next 2 sc 2 rows below; repeat from * to last 5 sc, sc in last 5 sc, turn.
Rows 12–14: Ch 1, sc in each sc; change to B at end of Row 14, turn.
Rows 13–48: Repeat Rows 3–14 three times.

Do not fasten off. Continue working in joined rounds with right side facing at all times.

With right side facing, join A with slip st in first sc.
Round 1 (right side): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in first sc (corner made), dc in each sc to last sc, 3 dc in last sc (corner made); working across ends of rows of first side, skip first row, dc in next 6 rows, *[skip next row, dc in next 7 rows] twice, skip next row, dc in next 6 rows*; repeat from * to * once, skip last row; working across opposite side of foundation ch, 3 dc in first ch (corner made), dc in each ch to last ch, 3 dc in last ch (corner made); working across ends of rows of 2nd side, skip first row, dc in next 6 rows; repeat from * to * once, skip last row; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3—256 dc.
