How to Start a Granny Square Blanket

Granny Square Crochet Blanket Instructions

  1. Start in the center of your project and work your way out. 

  2. Chain 3. 

  3. In the first chain that you worked, stitch three double crochets. 

  4. Chain 1. 

  5. Repeat steps 3-4 three more times in the same stitch. You should end up with four clusters of three double crochets. 

  6. To start your new row, slip stitch in the top of the next two stitches. 

  7. Slip stitch in the top of your first chain one stitch.

  8. Chain two. 

  9. Work two double crochets in that same chain 1 space. 

  10. Chain 1. 

  11. Work a double crochet cluster (three double crochets) in the same stitch. 

  12. In the next chain 1 space and repeat steps 9-11. 

  13. Repeat steps 9-11 for your next two chain one spaces to create your four corners. 

  14. Slip stitch in the top of the chain from the first double crochet cluster you worked in that row. 

  15. Slip stitch in the next two stitches. 

  16. Repeat steps 8-11 in the first chain stitch of row two. 

  17. Work a double crochet cluster in the next chain 1 space. 

  18. Go back to the next chain one stitch (this should be a corner), and work your typical cluster stitch of steps 9-11. 

  19. Repeat steps 17 and 18 until you finish your row. 

  20. Finish off your row with a slip stitch. 

  21. Continue to work this pattern until you reach your desired size of your crochet pattern.
