Henry the Hedgehog Pattern

The Henry the Hedgehog Pattern is the cuddliest woodland creature you'll ever find. He's just waiting to be made and have someone snuggle with him. This crochet pattern is intermediate level, but you'll mostly need to know how to single and double crochet in order to work it up. For the fur, you'll need super bulky Abakan yarn, and then worsted weight yarn for the body, a 3.5 mm crochet hook, stuffing fiber, a sewing needle, and black thread for detailing. Once you have these materials, get started right away!

NotesStitches used - 1/1 Rib, Single crochet, (uk: double crochet) = sc (uk: dc) using 3.5 mm crochet hook:
Row 1 (RS of work): 1 sc (uk: dc) into 2nd ch and into every foll ch st.
2nd and every foll row: 1 ch, 1 sc (uk: dc) into 1st sc (uk: dc) and every foll sc (uk: dc).

Hedgehog

Start with the front.

Front

Using col B make a chain foundation of 13 sts.
Crochet in sc (uk: dc) [= 12 sc (uk: dc)], inc at each end 1 sc (uk: dc) 3 times every 2nd row.
To inc 1 st at each end: Crochet 2 sc (uk: dc) on the 1st and last sc (uk: dc).
After the last inc, crochet 3 rows on the 18 sc
(uk: dc) obtained, then dec at each end 1 sc (uk:dc)
5 times every 2nd row, 1 sc (uk:dc) once on foll row.
To dec 1 sc (uk:dc) at each end: Crochet 1 ch., then 2 sc tog (uk: dc tog) on the 2 first dc (uk: sc),
cont the row and when 2 sc (uk: dc) remain at end of row, crochet 2 sc tog (uk: dc tog).
= 6 sc (uk: dc)
The front is complete. Do not fasten off.

Head

Following on from front, make a 34 sts ch. Close the round with 1 sl st into the 1st sc (uk: dc) of last row of front (= 40 sts).
Then, crochet as foll:
Rounds 1 and 2: 1 ch, then 1 sc (uk: dc) into each st, join these rounds and every foll round by working 1 sl st into the 1st sc (uk: dc) of the beg of round (= 40 sts).
Round 3: 1 ch, * 2 sc tog (uk: dc tog), 1 sc (uk: dc) into each of the foll 6 sts *, rep from * to * (= 35 sc (uk: dc).)
Round 4: 1 ch, * 2 sc tog (uk: dc tog), 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of foll 5 sts *, rep from * to * (= 30 sc (uk: dc)).
Round 5: 1 ch, then 1 sc (uk:dc) into each st.
Round 6: 1 ch, * 2 sc tog (uk: dc tog), 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of foll 4 sts *, rep from * to * (= 25 sc (uk: dc)).
Round 7: 1 ch, * 2 sc tog (uk: dc tog), 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of foll 3 sts *, rep from * to * (= 20 sc (uk: dc)).
Round 8: 1 ch, then 1 sc (uk:dc) into each st.

Ears (2)

Using col B form a ring, then crochet as foll:
Round 1: 1 ch, 6 sc (uk: dc) into ring.
Round 2: 1 ch, 2 sc (uk: dc) into 1st st, 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of foll 4 sts, 2 sc (uk: dc) into last st. (= 8 sc (uk: dc)).
Round 3: 1 ch, 2 sc (uk: dc) into 1st st, 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of foll 2 sts, 2 sc (uk: dc) into foll st, 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of foll 3 sts, 2 sc (uk: dc) into last st. (= 11 sc (uk:dc)) and fasten off.
Pull yarn tight to close the ring.

Paws (4)

Using col B form a ring, then crochet as foll:
Round 1: 1 ch 8 sc (uk: dc) into ring, close this round and every foll round into a ring by crocheting 1 sl st into 1st sc (uk: dc) at beg of round.
Round 2: 1 ch, 2 sc (uk: dc) into the 1st st, 1 sc (uk:dc) into foll st, * 2 sc (uk: dc) into the foll st, 1 sc (uk:dc) into next st *, crochet 3 times from * to * (= 12 sc (uk: dc)).
Round 3: 1 ch, then 1 sc (uk:dc) into each st taking the back loop.

Back

Using col A , crochet around front and head as foll:
Round 1: 1 sl st, 1 ch, then 32 sc (uk: dc) around the head and 51 sc (uk:dc) around front, close this round and every foll round by 1 sl st into the 1st sc (uk: dc) at beg of round. (= 83 sc (uk: dc)).
Round 2: 1 ch, then 1 sc (uk:dc) into each st.
Round 3: 1 ch, 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of first 2 sts, * 2 sc (uk: dc) into the foll st, 1 sc (uk:dc) into each of 2 foll sts *, rep from * to * (= 110 sc (uk: dc)).
Round 4: 1 ch, then 1 sc (uk:dc) into each st.

Finishing

Using the needle and black thread, embroider nose using straight st, and the eyes using French knot st.
Sew paws onto front.
Secure and weave in ends.
