Football Hat

Football anyone? Crochet this adorable Football Hat for anyone in the family. This free crochet hat pattern gives instructions for newborn through 12 months. It's an easy pattern that's great to wear while watching football on TV or when you're at a game.

Crochet HookG/6 or 4 mm hook, H/8 or 5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Materials:

  • Caron Simply Soft worsted weight yarn (6oz/315yds/170g/288meters)
    • 1 skein Chocolate
    • 1 skein White
  • Size crochet hook needed for size and gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • Gauge
  • G-hook Preemie (5 dc = 1 inch)
  • G-hook Newborn (5 dc = 1 inch)
  • H-hook 3-6 months (4 dc = 1 inch)
  • H-hook 6-12 months (4 dc = 1 inch)

Pattern notes

Chain 2 at beginning of rows does not count as a stitch. Join with slip stitch as indicated.


Instructions:

For Preemie:

  1. Round 1: With chocolate, chain 4, 12 dc in 4th chain from hook. Join with sl st in top of first dc. 12 dc
  2. Round 2: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. 2 dc in each stitch around, join in top of first dc. 24 dc
  3. Round 3: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat 11 times. 36 dc
  4. Change to white in joining sl st of Round 3.
  5. Round 4: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat 11 times. Change back to Chocolate in joining sl st. 48 dc
  6. Rounds 5-8: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Change to white in joining sl st at end of Round 8. 48 dc
  7. Round 9: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Change back to Chocolate in joining sl st.
  8. Round 10: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Finish off.

First Earflap:

  1. Counting from back center (joining stitch) skip 5 dc. Join chocolate with a sl st.
  2. Row 1: Chain 2, dc in next 10 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  3. Row 2: Chain 2, dc in next 8 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  4. Row 3: Chain 2, dc in next 6 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  5. Row 4: Chain 2, dc in next 4 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  6. Row 5: Chain 2, dc in next 2 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  7. Row 6: Chain 1, sc dec in next st twice. Finish off.

Second Earflap:

  1. Starting at Row 1 of First earflap. Count 16 stitches around front of hat. Join Chocolate with a sl st.
  2. Repeat Rows 1-6 of first earflap, finish off.
  3. Border: Join chocolate with sl st at back of hat. Chain 1. Sc evenly space across back of hat, around outer edge of first earflap, across front and around 2nd earflap. Join to first sc with sl st. Finish off.

Ties:

  1. Cut 12 25” strands of Chocolate. Divide into 6, for each tie. Fold in half, insert at center bottom of Earflap. Draw strands through at fold to form a loop on the hook. Pull free strands through loop and pull tight. Divide strands into 3 sections of 4 strands, braid. Knot at end and trim evenly.
  2. For Front “stitches” on football. Thread 12” strand of white in tapestry needle. Using picture as a reference, Insert threaded needle, from back to front in center of middle stitch in Round 8. Pull thread partially through. Going from front to back, Insert threaded needle through center of middle stitch in Round 5. Evenly space 3 “stitches” down front of “seam”. Fasten securely on inside of hat. Weave in all loose ends.

 


For Newborn:

  1. Round 1: With chocolate, chain 4, 12 dc in 4th chain from hook. Join with sl st in top of first dc. 12 dc
  2. Round 2: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. 2 dc in each stitch around, join in top of first dc. 24 dc
  3. Round 3: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat 11 times. 36 dc
  4. Round 4: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat 11 times. Change to white in joining sl st. 48 dc
  5. Round 5: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next 11 stitches) around. Join in top of first dc. Change back to Chocolate in joining sl st. 52 dc
  6. Rounds 6-10: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Change to White in joining sl st at end of Round 10. 52 dc
  7. Round 11: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Finish off.

First Earflap:

  1. Counting from back center (joining stitch) skip 5 dc. Join chocolate with a sl st.
  2. Row 1: Chain 2, dc in next 12 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  3. Row 2: Chain 2, dc in next 10 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  4. Row 3: Chain 2, dc in next 8 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.

Second Earflap:

  1. Cut 12 30” strands of Chocolate. Divide into 6, for each tie. Fold in half, insert at center bottom of Earflap. Draw strands through at fold to form a loop on the hook. Pull free strands through loop and pull tight. Divide strands into 3 sections of 4 strands, braid. Knot at end and trim evenly.
  2. For Front “stitches” on football. Thread 12” strand of white in tapestry needle. Using picture as a reference, Insert threaded needle, from back to front in center of front. Pull thread partially through. Going from front to back, Insert threaded needle through center of middle stitch in Round 5. Evenly space 4 “stitches” down front of “seam”. Fasten securely on inside of hat. Weave in all loose ends.

 

For 3-6 months:

  1. Change to H hook for next 2 sizes.
  2. Rounds 1-4: Same as for Newborn.
  3. Round 5: Chain 2, 2 dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next 11 stitches) around. Join in top of first dc. Change back to Chocolate in joining sl st. 52 dc
  4. Rounds 6-11: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Change to White in joining sl st at end of Round 10. 52 dc
  5. Round 12: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Change back to Chocolate in joining sl st.
  6. Round 13: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Finish off.

First Earflap:

  3. Rounds 6-11: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Change to White in joining sl st at end of Round 11.
  4. Round 12: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as joining. (Dc in next stitch) around. Join in top of first dc. Finish off.

First Earflap:

  1. Counting from back center (joining stitch) skip 6 dc. Join chocolate with a sl st.
  2. Row 1: Chain 2, dc in next 12 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  3. Row 2: Chain 2, dc in next 10 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  4. Row 3: Chain 2, dc in next 8 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  5. Row 4: Chain 2, dc in next 6 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  6. Row 5: Chain 2, dc in next 4 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  7. Row 6: Chain 2, dc in next 2 stitches, hdc in next st. Turn.
  8. Row 7: Chain 1, sc dec in next st twice. Finish off.

Second Earflap:

  2. Repeat Rows 1-7 of first earflap, finish off.
  3. Border: Join chocolate with sl st at back of hat. Chain 1. Sc evenly space across back of hat, around outer edge of first earflap, across front and around 2nd earflap. Join to first sc with sl st. Finish off.
