Retro Ring Trivet
This Retro Ring Trivet is a blast from the past. This free crochet pattern is made in remembrance of canning jar rings from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It can be made in various sizes depending on how many rings you use. Plus, it's quick to work up and is also an excellent stash-buster project.
Crochet HookI/9 or 5.5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

My grands did not do a lot of canning and I can not recall any trivets in this fashion. I just like it because of how pretty it is. I read up on the concept of the canning ring trivet and just wondering, were actually rings used to make a trivet?

I think that this trivet is really a piece of art. With the multiple colors and the appearance of being braided it is an attractive kitchen tool. When I see these types of designs I want to make them but I know I would never use them because I would be so afraid of damaging them.

This ringed trivet comes together in a smart way. I mean, it is genius. I am kind of in the younger set, and I have never seen something like this before. I liked looking through the entire pattern where she shows many different types of these trivets in lots of different sizes. You crochet the rings separately and then weave the connecting strip in and out of the rings- and it magically comes together!

Having just rediscovered this pattern in one of the free ebooks, I grabbed the nearest sixpack of soda and robbed it of the plastic rings. We recycled the plastic since there was no way my mom would have let go of her canning rings. Ive made this project many, many times but not for about 40 years or more. Ill be delighted to introduce my environmentally conscious granddaughters to this pattern, too!

This like very Celtic Knotish, you could almost change the colors to reflect St. Pattys . I do like this pattern it is easy to complete and even comes in different sizes so you could make all the rings at once then put together for each of the different sizes as you like!

My aunt made these back in the late 60s -- I think I still have a couple. She used the rings from six-pack sodas. I have a question, however. Is there any type of product available to crochet into heat-resistant items? For example, a hearth rug, hot pads -- anything requiring extra heat protection. I used to make these back in the 70's as gifts for friends. I still have a couple from then. I prefer to use the plastic soda can rings to crochet around. It gives you a nice solid shape on the circles, and more stability to your trivet. It is a great way to use up yarn scraps.

Would love to make again.....if only the pattern would come up....All I get is a bright orange screen ...no pattern.....so what happened to the pattern ?

It is there. I had to move the screen back and forth then click on the print/pdf .
