By the looks of the picture, this pattern looks like an oldie but goodie from the sixties? Cant wait to check out the site that this link takes me to. There are no additional pictures available on their site for this placemat. Also the yarn used was discontinued many years ago. Has anyone found an equivalent substitute?

What a cute pattern. I started crocheting about 50 years ago. That was back in the days of doilies. The pineapple and butterfly were two of my favorites. Somehow over the years I lost so many patterns. What a wonderful surprise to find them here! Iam teaching my grand daughter to crochet and this is next on the list!

I'm giving this Butterfly Placemats a rating of 3 because when I saw the title I was excited and I expected to see colorful butterflies design on the placemat but was disappointed to see a black and white placemat pattern. Nevertheless, those who want to have a vintage dining room motif will like this. Thanks for this free pattern, though.

Sometimes, i look at a pattern and i picture something else entirely. This is one of those patterns for me. When i look at it, i can't help but think how adorable it would be as a baby blanket. It would be easy to change the starting chain count and add more rows. It is simple enough that you could just keep going until you liked the size. And you could add more butterflies to it or just keep the few placed at the top or bottom.

Love this pattern... and yes, it would look better in color. However, in 1958, I understand color was very expensive, so the company probably was able to print more copies of the pattern book in black and white, and also make them more affordable for the average person, as well as making a greater profit for themselves by not using color.
