Our Mission

AllFreeCrochet is home to so many hundreds of free crochet patterns, from easy to crochet baby blankets patterns to complex Tunisian crochet patterns. We love hearing about all the beautiful crochet patterns that get made using our bloggers' stunning patterns—so many of our readers tell us that they make these patterns for friends and family, just to see them smile.

With that in mind, we're working with the American heart Association on their initiative, “Little Hats, Big Hearts" to donate homemade hats to newborn babies. Little Hats, Big Hearts is a wonderful project to help raise awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country.

Whether you are a crocheter, knitter, a sew-er, or just a crafter looking for a good excuse spend the weekend getting creative, we hope you'll consider making a quick, easy baby hat to give to a newborn in need. The deadline to donate is September 30, 2014 (patterns must be post-marked no later than Septmeber 30, 2014).

Win Free Lion Brand Modern Baby Yarn with Your Donation!

Lion Brand Yarn Company ProfileWe're offering an exciting Lion Brand giveaway worth more than $70! Send us a homemade newborn baby hat and you'll be automatically entered to win the complete collection of Lion Brand Modern Baby Yarn (one skein of each color).

When the contest is over, we will contact the lucky winner and send you your new yarn!

Where to Send Your Hats

We will be collecting all donated hats at our offices in Northbrook, IL and personally delivering them to the local Little Hats, Big Hats chapter in Chicago. Please have your homemade hats delivered to:

Prime Publishing, LLC
Attn: Baby Hat Charity Drive
3400 Dundee Road
Northbrook, IL 60062

We will be accepting hats from September 1, 2014 through September 30, 2014. Items must be post-marked no later than September 30, 2014.

Hat Requirements

Little Hats, Big Hearts works with both the Mother-Baby unit and Neonatal Intensive Care units of participating hospitals, so both newborn hats and preemie hats are needed. The hats can be either knit, crocheted, or even sewn, as long as they are red. Use any one of our basic crochet baby hat patterns, or a free pattern from one of our sister sites, such as AllFreeKnitting. Of course, you're also welcome to create your own unique pattern that will be treasured for years to come.

Here are two exclusive free patterns that were designed with this charity in mind:

There are a few yarn specifics to follow to ensure that Little Hats, Big Hearts can accept and distribute your generous donation. So while you're planning, please keep in mind that the yarn must be:

  • RED
  • cotton or acrylic
  • medium to heavy weight
  • machine washable and dryable

* Please, no buttons or bows, as they can be dangerous for little ones *

NOTE: A small amount of a 2nd color is okay, but the hat must be predominately red.

Hi everyone, All of the hats were donated last week (October 15) to the American Heart Association. They will be collecting hats until January 15, 2015 and then dropping them off at the participating hospitals to be given to all babies born in February. You can find more information here if you would like to still donate: The winner of the Lion Brand Modern Baby Yarn giveaway was Ms. Shelia Ulmer of Louisville, KY. Thank you to all that sent in hat(s) and helped make this charity drive such a huge success. Together, we were able to collect and donate 6311 red baby hats! Amazing! :) -Jenny, Editor, AllFreeCrochet

How do we find out if our donation was received? Or who won the yarn giveaway?

I would like to do this same thing in our local area in honor of a little boy who died from heart disease, but touched so many lives in his 7 little years on this earth. I would donate them to a local foundation that helps families battling life threatening illnesses, who indeed helped this little boy's family. Would there be a problem with me sharing the patterns for those who want to help?

just learned about this today, not enough time. Is this done every year?

Just saw this today, not enough time. Will this be done again next year??

i will be taking mine to edwards hospital in naperville,il. i hae made 20 so far.

I would like an diagram print of the crochet , which I find easier to read than the written which is long and hard to understand that why I don't use this web site , I have turn to foregin they use diagram on their crochet which I find a joy to use and learn fast to make beautiful crochets and knitting diagrams and thought you should use diagram so I can enjoy both worlds . thanks nancy

yes i just got today not enough time

I just got this offer in the mail to knit hats for babies and it needs to be mailed by the 30th. That only gives me 4 days to knit and send in the hat. That isn't enough time. I have a knitting group that would have loved to do this. Please send things like this sooner in the future.

Hi starryneko 5723520, the hats can have small animal ears- yes. @ sallycarr, This particular charity is to raise awareness for heart disease (hence, the red hats). There are plenty of other charities that accept designs of all colors. Please feel free to visit our charity page here for a list of organizations that you can donate to at any time: == Thanks!

Can our hat have animal ears on it?

I would think ears might be uncomfortable if a baby slept on them.

Wouldn't ears be uncomfortable for a baby to sleep on?

Disappointed that only red is acceptable. I have 50 infant hats that are waiting for a place to send them. None are red.

If you go on Facebook, Pat Pat's Hats is accepting hat donations in all colors
