This shawl is the perfect crochet pattern for those who are just learning to crochet. Bulky weight yarn is used to complete this free crochet shawl pattern, making it a quick and easy pattern to work up. Fringe adds a nice decorative finishing touch, which is optional for this particular crochet design. Lavender colored yarn makes this a nice clothing choice for chilly summer nights. I love the look of this Purple Beginner Shawl! Someone sugested using Lion Brand Thick and Quick yarn. It will be nice and soft and quit warm. The written pattern is easy to follow and understand. I love the purple and fringe on this one. I'm looking forward to making this beautiful shawl. Thank you so much for sharing this free crochet shawl pattern.

It's easy, it's inexpensive and it's pretty. That's all it takes for me. I don't know what the big todo is all about. You can use any similar yarn. Just get the same weight. That's all there is too it. I have old patterns that I love so I come across a lot of unavailable yarns.

A great beginner pattern for a great shawl that will keep you warm on the cool nights ahead. The link to get the pattern for this basic shawl takes you to the original posting on this site where you will find the instructions. Several has commented negatively because the yarn used has been discontinued.

Maybe the Lion Brand Hometown would be a good substitute for this seemingly discontinued yarn? What a great beginner project! It looks so luscious and cozy. Even in (early) spring time we can wear a shawl such as this. It's a simple stitch pattern which aids in the practice of maintaining your tension properly. If you slip a stitch or two nobody will even notice due to the nature of this type of yarn.

I would be more helpful if you could give total amount of yards for yarn needed as they vary so very much esp. for this pattern since the rec'd yarn is no longer available. Thank you.

Looks like Caron Cozi yarn is discontinued. Will any 5 wt yarn work?

As you continue to crochet, or knit for that matter, you will get a good feel for whether the recommended gauge is crucial to a project -- or the final measurements of the pieces that make up a garment or an overall project. Gauge is also a good way to find comparable yarns if you wish to use a yarn different from the one called for in a pattern, for reasons of cost, availability of that yarn, the desire to use a yarn you have, etc. I do make square samples for checking gauge when I choose to check gauge and keep them for coasters or to assemble into table mats, or even afghans.

CAN YOU READ THE POST I SENT TO ANOTHER MEMBER ON THIS PAGE AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP ME?

Gauge is a way to make sure your project comes out like the pattern. You use the yarn and chrochet about 15-20 chains then make several rows. If the gauge is not correct then you use a different hook to get the right gauge.

Hi, Since I haven't crocheted in probably 30 something years I decided to try and do this beginner throw for my grand daughters for Christmas 2011 and was wondering why the pattern doesn't say turn at the end of each row. Is this supposed to be taken for granted or am I missing something? I want you to know that I love getting your email. Fran Galvin

can you explain how to read the gauge and how to use the gauge I have never made a gauge and I don't know how to read it
