Mini Me Crochet Witch Hat and Shawl

Use your daughter's favorite colors to work up this Mini Me Crochet Witch Hat and Shawl from Red Heart Yarns. It can look however you want it to by using any combination of colors for the kid in your life. Even if it's chilly on Halloween night, your daughter will have a little extra warmth from these crochet shawl and hat patterns while still being the cutest witch on the block. Don't be drab and boring by dressing her up in all black- this homemade Halloween costume is much more fun!

Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook, J/10 or 6 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

    • Shawl C: 254 Pumpkin (1 skein)
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hooks (H/8, 5 mm) and (J/10, 6 mm)
  • Yarn Needle
  • Removable Stitch Marker

SIZE: 
Hat measures 13” (33 cm) tall and 20” (51 cm) in circumference
Shawl measures 18 (22)” (45.5 [56] cm) long.
Shawl directions are for size 4. Changes for size 8 are in parentheses.

GAUGE:
With smaller hook in Hat pattern, 8 sc and 8 rounds sc = 2” (5 cm). With larger hook in Shawl pattern, 10 sc and 4 rows in tr = 4” (10 cm). 

 

HAT
Round 1 (right side):
Starting at top of hat, With smaller hook and A, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join, place marker at beginning of round, work in a spiral, moving marker up as work progresses.
Round 2: Sc in each sc around.
Round 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc; repeat from * once – 8 sc.
Round 4: Sc in each sc around.
Round 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc; repeat from * once – 10 sc.
Round 6: Sc in each of next 10 sc.
Round 7: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 4 sc; repeat from * once – 12 sc.
Round 8: Sc in each of next 12 sc.
Round 9: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc; repeat from * once – 14 sc.

Round 49: With right side facing, join B with a slip st in first sc, ch 1, sc in first st and in each s around; join with a slip st in first sc.
Round 50-55: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with a slip st in first sc. Fasten off B.
Round 56: With right side facing, join A with a slip st in first sc, ch 1, sc in first st and in each sc around; join with a slip st in first sc. Do not fasten off.

Brim
Round 57: Ch 1, working in front loops only, *2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 7 sc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc – 90 sc.
Round 58: Ch 1, working in both loops of sts, *2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 8 sc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc – 100 sc.
Round 59: Ch 1, *2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 9 sc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc – 110 sc.
Round 60: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with a slip st in first sc.
Round 61: Ch 1, *2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 10 sc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc – 120 sc. 
Round 62: Ch 1, *2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 11 sc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc – 130 sc.

SHAWL
NOTE: Colors are changed at the end of each row, before pulling through the last 2 loops of the last tr, drop old color and draw through new color and then ch 4 with new color.
Color Sequence
Work in the following color sequence: 1 row each of *C, B, A, B; repeat from * throughout.
With larger hook and C, ch 3; join with a slip st to first ch to form ring.
Row 1: Ch 4, (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in ring, change to B while completing last tr, turn. 
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as tr here and throughout, 2 tr in space between first 2 tr, *tr in next space between sts, rep from * across to next ch-2 space, (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next ch-2 space; repeat from * across to last space, 3 tr in space between last 2 tr, change to A while completing last st, turn.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2, changing to B while completing last tr, turn. 
Rows 4-18 (22): Maintaining color sequence as established, repeat Row 2 (15 [19] times), change to B at end of last row. 

Edging
With B, ch 2, hdc evenly around entire Shawl working 3 hdc in each corner and in ch-2 space in center; join with a slip st in first hdc. 
Fasten off B. Weave in ends.
