Work up this Heroine For a Day Costume to let your daughter feel like she rules the world, even if not for very long. Homemade Halloween costumes are such a great idea because they save you money and have more sentiment than something you buy. This crochet Halloween costume from Red Heart comes with free crochet patterns for a cape, headband, belt, cuffs, leg warmers, and stars so that you can complete the entire ensemble. All of these are easy enough for even beginner crocheters!

Beginner

Crochet HookI/9 or 5.5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

MATERIALS:

  • Red Heart Super Saver:
    • A: 722 Pretty 'n Pink (1 skein)
    • B: 356 Amethyst (1 skein)
    • C: 324 Bright Yellow (1 skein)
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hook (I/9, 5.5 mm)
  • Yarn Needle
  • Sewing Needle and Matching Needle
  • Straight Pins (if needed)

GAUGE:
14 sts = 4” (10cm) in pattern; 10 rows in hdc = 4” (10cm).

SIZE:
Directions are for size 2. Changes for sizes 4, 6, and 8 are in parentheses.

Cape measures 19 (19½, 20, 21)” [48.5 (49.5, 51, 53.5 cm] wide across lower edge x 11, 12, 14, 15½” [28 (30.5, 35.5, 39.5) cm] long, including tabs.

Headband measures 16 (18, 20, 20)” [40.5 (45.5, 51, 51) cm] circumference.

Belt measures approximately 21 (21½, 22½, 23½)” [53.5 (54.5, 56, 59.5) cm] circumference.

Legwarmer measures 8” (20.5cm) circumference x 11½ (12½, 13, 15)” [29 (32, 33, 38) cm] long.

SPECIAL STITCHES:
hdc2tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop] 2 times, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.
sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

PATTERN NOTES
1. In cape and legwarmers, beginning ch-2 does not count as a half double crochet. Do not work last stitch into beginning ch-2.
2. Cape, headband, belt, and cuffs are worked in rows; star is worked in joined rounds in any desired colors.
3. Ribbing of legwarmers is made in rows then leg continues in joined rounds. Ties are optional.
4. Cape is worked in varying bands of 2 colors; be sure to work in correct color sequence for your size.
5. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.


CAPE
Note: Work color sequence as follows: 7 (8, 9, 10) rows with A, 6 (6, 7, 9) rows with B, 7 (8, 9, 10) rows with A.
With A, ch 56 (59, 61, 64).
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across, turn—55 (58, 60, 63) hdc. 
Rows 2-4 (4, 8, 12): Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn. 
Row 5 (5, 9, 13) (decrease row): Ch 2, hdc in first st, hdc2tog, hdc in each st to last 3 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in last st, turn—53, (56, 58, 61) hdc.

Size 2 only
Rows 6-19: Repeat Row 5—25 hdc.

Size 4 only
Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn. 
Row 7: Repeat Row 5—54 hdc. 
Row 8: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn. 
Rows 9-21: Repeat Row 5—28 hdc.

Size 6 only
Row 10: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn. 
Rows 11-24: Repeat Row 9—30 hdc.

Size 8 only
Row 14: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn. 
Rows 15-28: Repeat Row 13—33 hdc.

All sizes
Row 20 (22, 25, 29): Ch 2, hdc in each st; change to B, turn.

First Tab
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc in first 8 (9, 10, 11) sts; leave remaining sts unworked, turn—8 (9, 10, 11) hdc.
Rows 2-6 (6, 8, 8): Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn. 
Fasten off B at end of Row 6 (6, 8, 8).

Second Tab
Holding cape with first tab to your right, skip next 9 (10, 10, 11) stitches and join B with slip st in next st.
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc in same st as joining and in each remaining st, turn—8 (9, 10, 11) hdc.
Rows 2-6 (6, 8, 8): Ch 2, hdc in each st; change to C, turn. 

Edging
Ch 36, slip st in each ch (neck tie made), sc in each st of last row of second tab; working across ends of rows, sc evenly down outer side of second tab and cape to Row 1; working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch; working across ends of rows, sc evenly up opposite side of cape and outer side of first tab to last row of first tab, sc in each st of last row; ch 36, slip st in each ch (neck tie made); working across ends of rows, sc evenly across inner side of first tab to last row of cape, sc in each unworked st of last row; working across ends of rows, sc evenly up inner side of second tab to last row; join with slip st in first st. Fasten off.

HEADBAND
With C, ch 8.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch, turn—7 sc.
Rows 2-24 (28, 30, 30): Ch 1, sc in each st, turn. 
Row 25 (29, 31, 31): Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each st, turn—8 sc. 
Row 26 (30, 32, 32): Ch 1, sc in each st, turn. 
Rows 27-32 (31-36, 33-38, 33-38): Repeat last 2 rows 3 times—11 sc.
Row 33 (37, 39, 39): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st, turn—10 sc. 
Row 34 (38, 40, 40): Ch 1, sc in each st, turn. 
Rows 35-40 (39-44, 41-46, 41-46): Repeat last 2 rows 3 times—8 sc. 
Rows 41-65 (45-73, 47-77, 47-77): Ch 1, sc in each st, turn. 
Last Row: With wrong sides of Row 1 and Row 65 (73, 77, 77) together and working through both thicknesses, slip st in each st. Fasten off.

Edging
Join B in any st in back of headband along top edge, working across ends of rows, sc evenly spaced around; join with slip st in first st. Fasten off. Repeat for bottom edge. 

BELT
With B, ch 9.
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch and each ch across, turn—8 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st; change to A, turn. 
Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Row 2; change to B at end of Row 4. 
Rows 5 and 6: Repeat Row 2; change to A at end of Row 6.
Rows 7-66 (70, 74, 78): Repeat Rows 2-6 fifteen [sixteen, seventeen, eighteen] times; change to C at end of last row.

First Front
Row 1 (right side): Ch 1, sc in each st, turn. 
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st, turn—10 sc. 
Row 3: Repeat Row 1. 
Row 4: Repeat Row 2—12 sc. 
Rows 5-8: Repeat Rows 1 and 2 two more times—16 sc. Fasten off. 

Second Front 
With wrong side of belt facing, join C with sc in first set of loops of foundation ch.
Row 1: Working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch, turn—8 sc.
Repeat Rows 2-8 of first front but do not fasten off at end of Row 8.

Edging
Ch 1, *working across ends of rows, sc evenly spaced to next corner, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next corner, sc in each st of row to next corner, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next corner; repeat from * once; join with slip st in first st. Fasten off.

Ties
*Join B to any corner ch-1 space, ch 20, slip st in each ch. Fasten off. Repeat from * 3 times. Join A to center st of first front edge, ch 20, slip st in each ch; repeat for second front edge. Fasten off. 

LEGWARMER (make 2)
Bottom ribbing
With B, ch 8. 
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—7 sc.
Row 2: Working in back loops only, sc in each st.
Repeat last row 15 (17, 19, 21) times.
Joining Row: Holding wrong sides of first and last rows together, ch 1, working through back loops only of both thicknesses, slip st in each st, turn.

Leg
Pivot ribbing so ends of rows are facing.
Round 1: Ch 1, working across ends of rows, work 24 sc evenly spaced; join with slip st to first st—24 sc.
Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st; join with slip st to first st—24 hdc. 
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st; join with slip st to first st; change to A. 
Rounds 4 and 5: Ch 2, hdc in each st; join with slip st to first st; change to B.
Rounds 6 and 7: Ch 2, hdc in each st; join with slip st to first st; change to A.

Sizes 2, 6, and 8 only
Rounds 8-19 (23, 27): Repeat Rounds 4-7 three [four, five] times.
Rounds 20 and 21 (24 and 25, 28 and 29): Repeat Rounds 4 and 5 once.

Size 4 only
Rounds 8-23: Repeat Rounds 4-7 four times. 

All sizes
Round 22 (24, 26, 30): With B, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around; join with slip st to top of beginning ch-3.
Round 23 (25, 27, 31): Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with slip st to first st. 
Round 24 (26, 28, 32): Ch 1, (sc, ch 3) in each st; join with slip st to first st. Fasten off.

Tie (make 2 – optional)
With A, ch 61, slip st in 2nd ch and each ch. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Weave through Round 22 (24, 26, 30).

CUFFS (make 2)
With C, ch 7 (9, 11, 13). 
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch and each ch, turn—6 (8, 10, 12) sc. 
Rows 2-8 (8, 9, 9): Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each st, turn.
Rows 9-20 (9-20, 10-22, 10-22): Ch 1, sc in each st, turn. Holding first and last rows with wrong sides together, slip st through back loops only of Row 1 and both loops of last row. Fasten off.

STAR (make 2 in any color or as many as needed)
Leaving long tail for sewing, ch 2. 
Round 1: Work 5 sc in first ch; join with slip st to first st—5 sc. 
Rounds 2 and 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st; join with slip st to first st—20 sc at end of Round 3. 
Note: Points of star are made from rows worked within Round 4.
Round 4: *Sc in next 4 st (first row made), turn; ch 1, sc2tog twice (2nd row made), turn; ch 1, sc2tog, do not turn; ch 1, working in ends of rows, slip st in each row, slip st in base of 4th st of first row; repeat from * 4 times; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.
Note: If sewing to a t-shirt, weave in ends. 

FINISHING
Block cape lightly, if needed. 
Center star on B-colored band on cape; with beginning tail, backstitch center of star first, then sew points with end tail. Sew to center of headband, if desired, in same manner as cape.
Weave in all ends.
If using on a t-shirt, pin stars in desired location and sew down using matching thread.
