Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

MATERIALS:

  • Red Heart Super Saver:
    • A: 0324 Bright Yellow (1 skein)
    • B: 254 Pumpkin (1 skein)
    • C: 316 Soft White (1 skein)
    • D: 312 Black (small amount)
    • E: 3620 Glowworm (1 skein)
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hook (H/8, 5 mm)
  • Yarn Needle

SIZE: 
Long Strand measures 35” (89 cm)
Short Strand measures 26” (66 cm)

GAUGE:
Pumpkin = 2” (5 cm) wide and 1” (2.5 cm) high; 16 slip sts worked into 16 chs = 4” (10 cm).

SPECIAL STITCHES:
Beginning sc2tog =
Draw up a loop in first st, draw up a loop in next st, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Beginning dc2tog = Yarn over, insert hook in first stitch, *yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops; yarn over, insert hook in next stitch; repeat from *; yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.
dc2tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 2 times, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

NOTES:
1. Adjustable Loop: With long side of yarn in the palm of your hand, wrap yarn around finger. Insert hook under the wrap, grab yarn and pull through; ch 1, release circle around finger gently, work the specified number of stitches; pull tail gently to tighten the ring.
2. All rows and rounds are worked with right sides facing. 
 

CANDY CORN (Make 3)
With A, ch 5.
Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across – 4 hdc. Fasten off.
Row 2: Join B in first hdc, ch 2; work Beginning dc2tog, work dc2tog – 2 dc. Fasten off.
Row 3: Join C in first dc, ch 1; work Beginning sc2tog – 1 sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

PUMPKIN (Make 5)
Using B, make Adjustable Loop.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 5 sc in ring; pull tail to close; do not join – 5 sc.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around; join with slip st in first sc – 10 sc.
Round 3: (4 dc, hdc) in next sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next sc, slip st in next sc, sc in next sc, hdc in next sc, (hdc, 4 dc) in next sc, skip next sc, slip st in next sc, skip last sc – 17 sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Referring to photo, embroider a stem on each Pumpkin using D.

NECKLACE
Short Strand
Place all motifs with right sides facing. With E, ch 35.
Round 1: Referring to photo for placement, sc in edge of a Pumpkin; ch 15, sc in point of a Candy corn, ch 15, sc in edge of a Pumpkin, ch 35; join with slip st in first ch, being careful not to twist – 103 sts.
Round 2: Without turning, slip st in each ch and sc around; join with slip st in first slip st. Fasten off.

Long Strand
With E, ch 20.
Round 1: Referring to photo for placement, sc in edge of a Pumpkin; ch 25, sc in point of a Candy corn, ch 25, sc in edge of a Pumpkin, ch 20, sc in point of a Candy corn, ch 25, sc in edge of a Pumpkin, ch 20; join with slip st in first ch, being careful not to twist – 140 sts. Sc in join of Short Strand.
Round 2: Repeat Round 2 of Short Strand. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends. Cut a 12-inch strand of E; referring to photo, bind both strands of Necklace together at join; weave in ends. Block if desired.

The first thing I thought when I saw this necklace is that it would be the perfect thing to use with a small safety glow stick. Most of the ones Ive seen would match the green of the necklace itself (Red Hearts Super Saver in Glow Worm), and the added bits of pumpkin and candy corn just add to the fun. It would be great for both adults and children.
