Crochet HookF/5 or 3.75 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

MATERIALS:

  • Red Heart Super Saver: 2 skeins 3934 Day Glow A; 1 skein each of 722 Pretty ‘n Pink B, 3620 Glowworm C, and 324 Bright Yellow D
  • Susan Bates Crochet Hooks: 3.75mm [US F-5]
  • Tapestry Needle, Sewing Needle, Sewing Thread, Assorted Beads (10 mm), Sequins and Flowers

GAUGE:
16 sts and 7 rows dc = 4” (10 cm) in vest pattern; 4 rows sc = 1” (2.5 cm). Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.

SIZE:
Directions are for child size 2. Changes for 4, 6, 8, and 10 are in parentheses.
Finished Chest: 23 (26, 27½, 28½, 30½)” (58.5 [66, 70, 72.5, 77.5] cm)

Special Abbreviations
single crochet 2 together (sc2tog): [Insert hook in next st, yarn over, draw yarn through st] twice, yarn over, draw yarn through 3 loops on hook.

Larks Head Knot (Fringe)
Cut two 10” (25.4 cm) pieces of yarn and fold in half. Place folded end of strands behind a ch-2 space and pull through space with hook. Hook the 4 yarn ends and draw through the folded end and pull to tighten.

Always start each row of Vest with ch 3 (does not count as a st), dc in first dc

Back
With A , ch 48 (54, 57, 60, 63).
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook, *ch 2, skip next 2 ch, dc in next ch, repeat from * across; turn—46 (52, 55, 58, 61) sts; 15 (17, 18, 19, 20) ch-2 spaces.

Note: Beginning ch-2 does not count as a st. First row of chart complete.

Row 2: Ch 3 (does not count as a st here and throughout), dc in first st, *ch 2, skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, repeat from * across; turn.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2.

Assembly
With right sides facing, sew Fronts to Back across shoulders and sides.

Flower (make 2  [2, 3, 4, 4] with B for 2nd color; make 3 [3, 3, 4, 4] with D for 2nd color)
With C, ch 4; slip st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc in ring; join with a slip st in first sc. Fasten off C .
Round 2: With right side facing, join 2nd color with a slip st in any st, ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in first sc of petal**, sc in next sc in Round 1; repeat from * around, ending last rep at **; join with a slip st in first sc. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length. Alternating colors, sew Flowers, evenly spaced around the front and back chest area of vest.

Front Vest Ties
With C, make two 10” (25.4 cm) chains. Fasten off, leaving a sewing length. Sew one Tie to the left and right front of vest at beginning of neck shaping. Sew beads at the end of each chain for decoration.

Bottom Row of Fringe
With C, using 2 strands of yarn for each fringe, place one fringe in each ch-2 space across bottom edge of vest, by working a Larks Head Knot.

Second Row of Fringe
Alternating colors B, C and D, using 2 strands of yarn for each fringe, place one fringe in every other ch-2 space around Row 2 of Vest, by working a Larks Head Knot.

Headband
With A , ch 7.
Color Sequence: Work in the following color sequence: 4 rows each of * A, B, A , C, A , D; repeat from * throughout.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across; turn – 6 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Rep Row 2, working 2 more rows of A , then changing color as indicated, until headband measures 14 (15, 16, 17, 18)” (35.5 [38, 40.5, 43, 45.5] cm) from beginning, or for 1” (2.5 cm) less than desire length.

End Point
Row 1: Ch 1, sc2tog first 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts; turn – 4 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, [sc2tog over next 2 sts] twice. – 2 sts. Fasten off.

Beginning End Point
Row 1: With right side facing, working across opposite side of foundation ch, join A with a slip st in first ch, ch 1, sc2tog first 2 ch, sc in each of next 2 ch, sc2tog over last 2 ch; turn – 4 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, [sc2tog over next 2 sts] twice. – 2 sts. Fasten off A.

Headband Tie
Join B with a slip st at tip of one End Point, ch 1, sc in same st, work a 10” (25.4 cm) ch. Fasten off B. Repeat Tie on other End Point. Weave in ends.

Finishing Headband
Sew on flower buttons, beads and sequins for decoration.

Peace Sign
(make 2 for Earrings and 1 for Necklace)
Round 1: Join B with a slip st around one 3” (7.5 cm) metal ring, ch 1, work 46 sc in ring; join with a slip st in first sc, ch 15. Fasten off B , leaving a sewing length.


Peace Symbol Design
Sew end of ch-15 to the opposite side of the ring. At the bottom of the ring, count 7 sts to the right of the junction of ch-15 loop, join B ,with a slip st in next st, ch 8, slip st to the center
of ch-15 loop, ch 8, skip 7 sts to the left of the junction of ch-15 loop, slip st in next sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Loop for Earring Hook or Clasp
Join B with a slip st in the top of ring to the right of the junction of ch-15 loop, ch 20, slip st in next sc to the left of the junction. Fasten off. With sewing needle and matching sewing thread, sew on earring clasp or pierced earring hook to the center of loop. Weave in ends.

Necklace Chain
Join B with a slip st in the top of ring to the right of the junction of ch-15 loop, work a 21” (53.5 cm) long ch (or for desired length), slip st in next sc to the left of the junction. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

FINISHING
Sew on sequins and beads to flowers, headband, earrings, necklace and vest as desired for decoration. Weave in ends.
