Many people believe making the rib stitch is quite difficult if it’s not knitted; this is not true. It is quite possible to crochet the ribbing stitch using the single crochet stitch with one of two techniques. You can either make elastic ribbing or firm ribbing. Don’t be afraid to make a fitted piece of clothing just because you think you’ll need to knit the ribbing instead of crochet.

When following crochet instructions to create elastic ribbing there will be plenty of room for the garment to stretch to your comfort. This type of ribbing is worked from side to side and is used for crocheted mittens, socks or even hats. If you were to crochet a sweater you would work the waistband and pick up the stitches from one side to finish the piece. You have to chain the correct amount of stitches, according to the crochet instructions, in the first row and once you reach the second row and beyond you work the stitch in the back loop only.

Your other option for the ribbing stitch is firm ribbing, which is best done in double crochet; this will give you a nice finished look. Because the firm ribbing stitch is not worked from side to side, it makes it easier to add to crochet patterns other than sweaters like the neck area or sleeveless tops. The ribbing stitch is then formed by working the stitches around the stem on the row below, instead of in the two loops at the top.

In crochet ribbing you can work horizontally or vertically. Horizontal ribbing is used to crochet dishcloths. Watch the video tutorials to get a grasp on the ribbing stitch. You can also make this fun Easy Go Green Cup Cozy! There are many free crochet patterns out there that use the ribbing stitch so don't be afraid to try something out of the box.
