Crochet Butterfly Throw
Butterflies dance across this lovely pink throw! The Crochet Butterfly Throw is a beautiful free pattern for the intermediate crocheter. Crochet HookI/9 or 5.5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Afghan measures 41" x 57".
Materials:
- RED HEART® "Super Saver®": 5 Skeins 311 White CA, 1 skein 724 Baby Pink CB, 2 skeins 774 Lt Raspberry CC.
- Crochet Hook: 5.5 mm [US I-9].
- Yarn needle.
GAUGE: Square measures 9" high x 8 1/2" wide. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
SQUARE 1 (Make 17): With CC, ch 4; join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2); [(dc, ch 1, dc) all in ring – v-st made; ch 2] 3 times, dc in ring, ch 1; join with a sl st in 3rd ch of ch-5; slip st in next space changing to CA. Fasten off CC.
NOTE: DO NOT work into the ch-1 sps of v-sts on Rnds 2-7.
Rnd 2: With CA, ch 5, v-st in same space, ch 1;[(v-st, ch 2, v-st) all in next ch-2 space – corner made; ch 1] 3 times, dc in first space, ch 1; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of ch-5; slip st in next space.
Rnd 3: Ch 5, v-st in same space, ch 1, v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1, [work corner, ch 1, v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] 3 times, dc in first space, ch 1; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of ch-5; slip st in next space.
Rnd 4: Ch 5, v-st in same space, ch 1, [v-st in next space, ch 1] twice, * work corner, ch 1, [v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] twice; repeat from * twice more, v-st in space, ch 1, dc in first space, ch 1; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of ch-5; slip st in next space.
Rnd 5: Ch 5, v-st in same sp, ch 1, [v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] 3 times, * work corner, ch 1, [v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] 3 times; repeat from * around; dc in first space, ch 1; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of ch-5; slip st in next space.
Rnd 6: Ch 5, v-st in same space, ch 1, [v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] 4 times, * work corner, ch 1, [v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] 5 times; repeat from * around; dc in first space; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of ch-5, slip st in next space. Change to CC.
Rnd 7: With CC, ch 5, v-st in same space, ch 1, [v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] 5 times, * work corner, ch 1, [v-st in ch-1 space, ch 1] 5 times; repeat from * around; dc in first space, ch 1; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of ch-5; slip st in next space. Change to CA.
Rnd 8: With CA, ch 1, * (sc, ch 2, sc) all in same ch-2 space of corner, ch 1, [skip next sc, sc in ch-1 space, ch 1] 13 times; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
SQUARE 2 (Make 18): Work same as Square 1 EXCEPT work beginning ch and Rnd 1 with CA.
BUTTERFLY (Make18): With CB, ch 10.
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * sc in next ch, (slip st, ch 5, slip st) all in next ch, sc in next 3 ch, (slip st , ch 9, slip st) all in next ch, sc in next 2 ch **, ch 1, TURN to work on other side of ch; sc in first 2 ch, (slip st, ch 9, sl st) all in next ch, sc in next 3 ch, (sl st, ch 5, sl st) all in next ch, sc in last 2 ch, ch 1; join with a slip st in first sc.
Rnd 2: (2 Dc, ch 1, [tr, ch 1] 5 times, 2 dc) all in ch-5 loop, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, (3 dc, ch 1, [tr, ch 1] 6 times, 3 dc) all in ch-9 lp, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, sc in ch-1 sp; sc in next sc, skip 1 sc, (3 dc, ch 1, [tr, ch 1] 6 times, 3 dc) all in ch-9 lp, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, (2 dc, ch 1, [tr, ch 1] 5 times, 2 dc) all in ch-5 lp, skip 1 sc; join with a sl st in next sc. Change to CC.
Rnd 3: With CC, ch 1, sc in each st and ch-1 space around; join with a slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
Butterfly Body (Make 18): With CC, ch 6, slip st in 6th ch from hook (head of butterfly), ch 14. Fasten off. Evenly tack down center of butterfly to make body and head of each butterfly.
FINISHING: Sew a butterfly to each Square 2. Sew squares together as shown.
Border-Rnd 1: With right side facing, attach CA in ch-2 sp of any corner square; ch 1,* (sc, ch 2, sc) all in corner sp, ** ch 1, sc in ch-1 space; repeat from ** to next corner, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc, slip st into next ch-2 space.
Rnds 2 and 3: Ch 1, * (sc, ch 2, sc) all in ch-2 space, ** ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp; repeat from ** to next corner; ch 1; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc. Change to CC at end of Rnd 3.
Rnd 4: With CC, repeat Rnd 2. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

The butterfly on this design really make the design. However looking over the one picture here I can say easily that with or without the butterfly applique this throw would still be pretty.

What an adorable throw for any room. It would be totally acceptable to gift this for a young girl but this would also be lovely in the sun room of a home as well. Butterflies make everyone smile so why not make a share a few with you whole family.

OH my, this is just perfect for my grand daughter. She loves pink, purple and butterflies. I just have to make it and put it aside for Christmas. She will be thrilled and think I am the best grand mother ever. Thank you for sharing this beautiful throw. It may even end up being a wall hanging.

This is an absolutely perfect little afghan for tiny Miss Sophies room. It also works up quite quickly which is always good for any busy person trying to make anything in their few precious spare hours. Pink always makes Sophie give the hugest smiles and, with winter on the way here in South Africa, this gorgeous baby afghan is going to keep her cozy and warm in the coming months.

I made this in pink and purple with pink butterflies on the purple squares for my granddaughter for Christmas, she loved it, thanks for the pattern.

My best friend is really into dragonflys. Does anyone have any advice or know of a dragonfly pattern. I would like to make her something exactly like this substituting dragonflies for the butterflies. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks Denise Stackhouse

Is it just me or is there something very wrong with this pattern? I figured out what I was supposed to be doing but, starting with row 4, I don't think it's written right. If I'm just getting something wrong, I'm very sorry (it's happened before!), but I really think it's not right.

I feel the same way, I have tried it several times, called a crochet "pro" and they said something is not quite right. Finally had to use an old granny pattern and incorporate the butterflys into it.
