If you have been working up hats for any amount of time, you probably have several Universal hats among your pattern collection. Not all patterns work with all sizes of hooks, so Im always happy to find projects specifically designed for larger hooks (size J and larger). I also appreciate it when the designers include the stitch count at the end of the rows or rounds. Perfect for my crochet students.

This pattern looks remarkably like one that I am currently making. Except for the slouchy part and the ending with several tows of SC it looks almost exactly the same. I have been working on the smaller beanies and was trying to find a pattern more fitting for the male gender. I found it!

It's true that this hat is suitable for either gender or any age. I used this pattern to make hats for a family friend's two children, a boy and a girl. All I did was use neon colors for the girl and reds and blues for the boy. They loved them! I'd recommend this for beginners.

Yeah, that photo reminds me of a multicolored yarn I have in my stash. Why not? I can make beanie in multicolored yarn, right? Why didn't I think of that before? I have the brown/cream/white combination which looks like this Universal Slouchy Hat pattern. Oh i did not realize that that kind of yarn would make a lovely hat, slouchy or beanie, it would look so lovely. Thanks for the free pattern.

Wow what an awesome pattern. Thank you so much for sharing. I love that you have several sizes. I am crocheting caps for cancer patients for charity and can give several different sizes and this is perfect for that cause. Wonderful and so easy to follow.

I made this today for my 7 yr old granddaughter out of Red heart Kids playful color and LOVEd how it came out. I did slightly modify it by finishing it off with 7 rows of single crotchet instead of 4. I like the wider head band look. So happy with this hat!

Its now 12/24/14, I've made maybe 80-90 of these hats! I made one out of cotton and decided they would be great for ladies going thru chemo. I've given most away to local hospitals with cancer units. FYI, I'm addicted to making these hats! (I don't wear hats)

I'm so glad to hear how you've used the pattern! So glad you enjoy it!

I think I will enjoy making a lot of these! Regina

I've made five of these hats so far, several as gifts. The pattern is easy to follow and works up well. Note: my head is smaller than average so I used the hook sizes from the child's size and followed the adult instructions. Perfect fit!

Easy to follow and looks and fits great

Just a quick note in Dec 2013 I added a Toddler size so it's now available in 3 sizes :) Toddler, Kids & Adult :) So Glad everyone is liking it.

Finally a slouchy hat that is easy and works perfectly.

I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS FOR ADULTS UNTIL I READ COMMENTS THANKS EVERYONE.

Although the write-up here says to use an H hook, when you go to the pattern itself you actually start with a J and switch to an H for the kids size, and start with a K and switch to a J for the adult size. I only brought my H hook with me today so I won't be able to start this until I get home! :(

I made one of the adult slouchy hats out of Simply soft and it turned out real nice, I loved working with the pattern and the Simply soft yarn.

I just made one out of Caron Simply Soft. The main part of the hat is much "meshier" than it would be with regular yarn, but it's nice, and definitely slouchy. It's a good clear pattern and the tip on how to join rounds was very helpful... made the joins much less noticeable. I'm looking forward with making one with more masculine yarn. My teenage nephew wears this kind of hat 24/7 theses days. Thanks to Elizabeth! --Victoria

So cute!! I'm going to start one this evening!!

I'd like to see a photo of someone wearing one of these. I can't visualize why it is call 'slouchy'.

Click on "Click here for Crochet Pattern" and you will see adult and child each with one of these hats. They are not hugely slouchy, but look really nice.

You could always add more rounds the same as 7-18 to give it the slouchyness you want...
